Now I have your attention!!For a week or so now and again but now all the time, when You rev the engine stationary or driving there is the a very loud cutting air sound. It is just like when you have your head near the radiator fan. But it is that loud in the car!!
I thought maybe a distorted fan fin, but not!!Should the fan spin on a one way bearing when the engine is off? Mine isnt. Or is it the turbo maybe? I cant see any split hoaes either!
Mystery so far!!

inlet manifold gasket, does it sound really loud?

mine used to do 1 every 12 months until it was re tapped out and bigger threaded bolts put in, oh it was chipped though!

Sounds to me like your viscous fan has locked up,with engine off it should spin fairly freely

I agree with Henry D. The fan should freewheel when the engine is cool (although not immediately after starting as it takes a few seconds to redistribute the fluid). Take the shroud off, start it up and after about 30 seconds try (very carefully and keeping hands etc well clear) to slow down the fan with something like a large paintbrush. You should be able to stop it - if not it's seized.

This however is better than failing the other way as mine did when it didn't lock up at all.

I've not long brought a disco and mine sounds exactly the same like a Hoover on start up. The guy told me it was a whining transfer box???

I put a Britpart one from Island on mine. The first one that arrived was DOA (wouldn't freewheel). The replacement arrived very promptly and was fine - been on now for about 5 months.

The only (slight) problem is that the fan blades have some very sharp edges and I cut my fingers to pieces on them.

A set of fan spanners from Ryan Wild on the D2 boys club made fitting and removing a doddle.

I have ordered one today along with a new belt and a new tensioner.
Thought I may as well do it while the fan is off!! Got it all for £99.60 from Rockingham Landrover. Hopefully I will get it done at the weekend and it will be ok!!
