Well.. couple of weeks ago, when I had that knocking sound on the back, after taking the half-shaft out, discovered I had almost no wheel bearings left!
as I needed the disco the next day, I went down to my local 4x4 place (Newbury 4x4) to buy a set of bearings..

So, came out with 2 bearings, 2 locking nuts, 1 locking washer, 1 oil seal and 1 paper gasket…….. and £30 less in my pocket!!!
and..and… the bearings are Britpart!! (all they had in the shop..)

Now.. as I've changed one, I'm thinking about changing the other 3, plus the fact that yesterday I started hearing now and again a grinding noise from the right front…
what do you guys reckon? it sprobably worth no? considering the rear one I changed was in this state…

Anywhoo… going on ebay found loads of bearing kits for little over £10… the bearings are Timken? any good?

but back to the initial subject… I've been ripped off havent I? 30 quid for a set of bearings???????
what do you guys usually pay? and what brand?

Timken are fine, I paid £55 delivered for a set of 8 bearings, 4 gaskets, 8 locknuts and 4 oil seals from ebay ... ;) Can't remember the seller, but they were Timken and have been in since Jan this year with no issues so far ... and the Disco is well used, frequently waded and stuck in mud!!

Timken are OME parts, so the best to fit. Always make sure you are getting timken bearings even if the seals are ****part. I picked up a pair of timkens prior to going to the Alps and i think they cost me £30 from my indi. They are cheaper online obviously, paddocks are a good price as i got them there before. I wouls certainly look into doing the other 3. I only have 1 corner left now :D

I still reckon yu need to remove the filler plugs and check if you have any oil in those axles and gearbox/TBox first. No point in replacing bearing unless yu are sure that the lube is good (or even exists).
 
I thought so too .. ;) Can't recall seeing the same kit since, but obviously I haven't really been looking either .. ;)
 
yeh MHM, thats definately one of the first things to get done...

but considering the state one of my bearings was...I reckon its a good call to change all the other ones, and for just a bit over £10 for each, is not much...

but reading the comments, looks like I've been definately ripped of with the £30 ones..
 
Name and Shame - yu have :D and vote with your feet. If we all did, the bad guys would soon notice a drop in trade.
 
To be fair I don't think you were ripped off.

What I mean is the dealer local to you only has limited shelf space and much greater overheads than an ebay seller, they have a phone system you can talk to them on, they (probably) have a service desk etc etc, and items stood on shelves cost money .. so a decent mark-up should be expected.

I didn't need them there and then and could wait for delivery ... ;)
 
yeh.. I think i'm only going to use them in case of emergency...

btw, front and rear bearings, they are all the same arent they?
or do i have to buy specifically for the front and rear?

another thing.. I've seen on ebay, some auction say up to chassi JAxxxx....
thought they would be all the same for Disco 1?
or are they different from the 200 to 300?
 
Officially I dunno ... but Paddocks give the same part number, STC4382G, for all Defenders, Discoveries etc etc ... ;)

They do have various 'classes' like "Hub bearing - front axle to JA032850 - Timken (OE)"

and "Hub bearing - rear axle non ABS - Timken (OE)" but all have the same LR part number, so all should be identical .. same parts incidentally for ABS or non-ABS.
 
Just a thought, but you wanted your car on the road the next day, if you had ordered cheaper bearings off ***bay/ Mail order, without a premium carraige fee, I doubt you would of had them next day.
TBH. if I needed my vehicle on the road, I wouldn`t mind paying a bit extra to get the parts off the shelf.

You can't go wrong with Timken, used them in racing gearboxes. Always stick to well known brand bearings SKF, FAG, RHP etc.

If any of you have trouble obtaining bearings let me know the bearing number if possible as I have a few catalogues and being in engineering have access to many suppliers.

yeh, that's why i bought them in the shop.
ebay sometimes is pretty quick, depends on seller, I've bought stuff before and got it delivered next day...but this was a saturday so, no chance of having the next day.
