Right,

Spent a while under the freelander last night, jacked up and removed prop and rear wheels are spinning very smoothly, no roughness, no clunking, no noise at all, just a little oil so probably need new seals but all in all rear diff seems fine.

Car dropped to floor with prop still off and gently rolled back and forward, clunk suggests a minced IRD.

Not sure as of yet if VCU is fubar or not because it displayed no signs of failing but will do 1 wheel up test when IRD replaced and proceed with caution from there.

Now, where to buy an IRD, recon or salvage, any advice is welcomed.

Unfortunately there are a few problems with that......

1) its in the user handbook - no-one seems to read that.
2) it is a sticky - no-one seems to read that.
3) it has been posted gazillions of times - no-one seems to search.
4) peeps dont believe what we tell em even when they do find the info.
Hi the handbook says IDEALLY change all 4 tyres not must ! or it will kill your drive train . the lack of clear facts on how important this issue is even on LZ baffles me i found out from bellengineerings site !

Yep, Bell Engineering, 100%
They sorted out my VCU and re-sent it repaired again after the courier damaged it.

Yeah, that's how I read it.
This is my first 4x4 so know nothing about 4 equal tyre sizes, I thought that was what a diff was for anyway, further distance round a corner and all that so why does it not work when going in a straight line....

Also, I can't find the sticky about equal tyre sizes or the gazzillions of people mentioning it.

I searched a lot and read a very lot before I encountered my current sorry state of affairs to try and avoid these mishaps. Yet, I cant remember it saying if you dont fit 4 tyres at the same time you run a good chance of killing your car.

I also wrongly assumed all 235/50/R18 would be the same size regardless of manufacturer.

There are only so many bad situations a freelander owner can imagine, I could not search for problems I did not know existed.

Anyhow, Found a 2nd hand IRD for £350, dont think I can stretch to a recon one, and I'm going to fit it myself with the help of a couple of pals.

Wish me luck

You can also test the vcu whilst off your Freelander. Clamp 1 prop, and put a bar through the uj of the prop on the other side of the vcu, with a weight on the end.

Hi siblo google bellengineering re,IRD also do a search hot vcu thread on here hope you get it sorted :) ps the 4x4 drivetrain on the freelander is unique and not like "normal 4x4s"

Yes, UNIQUE, so special in it's own way.....

@ Hippo, May try that VCU test while its in bits, but, was going to test when IRD is in and if it fails Blank it off temporary and run 2 wheel drive for a month till I can replace the VCU if needed.

sidenote I've never seen a 3 door FL with the roof off on the road, does anyone actually do that...

Some peeps take the roof off. Only thing is you can't leave stuff in the boot if you do, if your leaving the vehicle. Perhaps why most keep the roof on.

I took my old one to Italy up in the hills once with the family. I took the roof bars off before going and then we had lots of days with the roof off but as pointed out zero security.

I had the soft top as well but what a pain to use and so badly designed.
