Hi guys (My air con) that i thought i had fixed (at least 3 times) has gone again  I was told by the local air con guy ( he put dye in the system etc) it was the Evaporator that has gone

Anyone know of 1 a cheep place to get one from or 2 a second hand one going?? apparently they don't fail that much and he says its worth taking the risk fitting a second hand one, he told me to change the heater matrix too (at no extra labour charge) as they seem to fail on a regularly, so help on this would be much appreciated

Thanks guys

Edit to say its a 97 DSE (BMW Engine) 2.5

Is this the one that goes behind the dash??? (i may as well replace that as well and the O rings while its being done yea???????)

have a look at range rover heaven on ebay. bloke called alan breaks rangies. he has virtually everything. he is honest and his phone number is listed as well so you can querie any problems before you buy. RECOMMENDED.

did you find out where on the evap. on mine the evap(the bit in the engine compartment) had a hole in the top left corner. i am told its a common place they go and is a quirk of the manufacture process. if it is take the panel off above the radiator, 4 bolts, and check for pitting/holes in this area. then clean with emery cloth and put some 'liquid metal' type stuff on it. i used one that is for aircon as well as many other uses, read the back of the package.

its fixed the leak and only cost me a fiver!!!

No not yet, i had it full of gas (with a dye in it) and the next day it was empty again, well the book was showing up anyway, and you could see the dye all over it, so i wont know until i take the whole dash off to have a look at it proper

Thanks for the tip about the mettle fix, but with my luck that wont work!!!

Just a PS do i have to taker the whole of the front dash off to do this job? anyone know any different, tips and advice always welcome

Hi Dopey-I have a spare evaporator and heater matrix in good condition.
Yes the dash has to come out-a good weekends work and need someone to give you a lift, it's cumbersome. Helps if you have dummy guide pins-which I also have. Also ideal opportunity to change any faulty blend motors.
Coming over to the U.K. from 18/12 until 7/1.
Give me a PM if you want more info.

It's easy to get them mixed up-the Condenser is the "Radiator" behind the grille with the electric fans attached and has Gav has pointed out is prone to leak at top l.h. corner on the "U" bend (I have replaced two new ones on mine in 5 years). The Evaporator is the cooling matrix in the heater box behind the dash.

Irishrover
I am now sorted for parts, a very good pal of mine has a heavy discount at a Landy dealership, so life isn't too bad, but i will find out on Monday for sure if he can get it, he told me its a dealership item only (hence the bloody high price of the thing) but if nothing comes of it, or the price is more than he said, i will definitly take you up on the offer m8 and thanks

Can you PM me a price (with postage i use Parcel2go) i know your in Ireland, so you may not have that, but its DHL by any other name and its as cheep as chips used to be

Ok guys im sorted out now, i managed to get one on ebay for £10 thanks all and Irishrover thanks for the offer m8 good man

No problems Dopey. A few years ago I removed the dash on my P38 to do the Blend Motors-managed to get a dash out of a 2000 model cheap in case I needed more parts. However, I stripped the heater out and kept the matrix and evaporator. I also made up the guide pins for the dash removal/refit (See Rave)-they are a great help. If you need more info on the dash removal-just shout.

As ever your a great help, to everyone on this forum, and thanks for the help you have given me m8, if your ever close to Heathrow feel free to pop around, i owe you a few pints m8 thanx
