Sean thank you very much. I will do as you sugest. I'm going to check for an air lock and change the guage first and see what happenes. may also try another thermostat, they are pretty cheep to get so shouldn't raise too many questions with the Mrs.

Thank you every one for the help, i'll make sure I post an update on what the results were.

Quick update; I've had the new dash/ temp guage and fittied it all yesterday. Interesting trying to re-connect all the wiring in the dark but it all looks to be working

Now just paranoid that the sender is not the correct one for the guage, may well have been totally wrong before but it was as I was when got it so guess I'm just stressing.

Guage seams to be working but will be ordering a new sender for it today so will then know for sure that they pair up. Will update again once sender has been fitted.

does the temp needle point upwards, and stay constant while your driving ?

Well , went for a drive and it got up to about the 11 o'clock mark but that was it.

Was about to put a new post up but know you will be able to answer this one given your on-line.

If, when up to temperature the top pipe is A not that hot and B not hard to squeeze, could my water pump be out or on its way. paranoid about over heating but want to get car fit for long journeys.

just keep an eye on the temp gauge and the coolant level - if the temp gauge gets up to to about 11 - 12 o'clock and stays there all of the time there's nowt much wrong

sweet, very happy boy. Thank you very very much for the help. Will give it a couple of weeks of running and put a last update on to confirm all is good.

No need to buy and fit a new sender then?
