Hi again,

I’m still tackling some bits and pieces and I just wondered whether this was anything worth worrying about.

I know P38s are notoriously ‘oily’ but this seems to be weeping quite a bit.

helpful for any advice.

That looks fine

either sweating from the oil filter gasket or a sump/front cover leak..

Is that coming from the oil cooler pipes?

Looks similar to the leak I have. I am pretty sure on mine the oil cooler pipe is starting to breakdown which lets oil weep slightly. Oil cooler piper are 30 quid each last time I looked.

Yeah, the worst of it seems to be coming from that pipe, I wasn’t quite sure what it was for !
If it’s only £30 it’s worth doing as it’ll soon cost that in oil !

The pipe nuts are steel, but the cooler is alloy, they tend to corrode together. When I did my GB cooler pipes the threads on the GB cooler got nerfed. I'd check your supplier has an engine oil cooler in stock before you start, just in case.

Nothing worse that being stuck waiting on parts for weeks for a "5 minute job."
 
You will find that the culprit is one of two things. Either it is a leak around or from the oil pressure switch, or the O ring sealing the Welch plug holding the oil pressure relief spring in on the side of the oil pump is about gone. When either fails the oil loss becomes pretty spectacular, think a pool about a foot in diameter every time you pull up.

both are simple jobs, made much easer by removing the bottom radiator hose and thermostat for access. If your car is LHD then better still, remove the RH wheel and inner guard and you are looking straight at the offending parts.
 
Yikes !
This is starting to get a bit scarily complicated... will need to bury my head in Rave or swallow my pride and pay a trusted and competent mechanic !
