Hi all,
I have just bought my first "landy". I thought i may as well go for something comfy that will annoy the eco-nuts and fairly cheap (so i don't have to worry about things like washing it).
I have bought a 1990 Range Rover Vogue SE with an LPG kit on it.
It starts and runs brilliantly but when I am driving it and put my foot hard down the auto box revs through first up to 5200(ish) rpm and sits there for 5-6 seconds before changing up. As it changes it feels like I have just been shunted from behind. It is a serious jolt. If i hold the throttle at about 3/4 it still jolts but doesn't hang around at the top of the rev range before changing up, driving it "normally" it is nice and smooth.
I have never driven an auto v8 before so I’m not sure if this is normal.

It has another problem (at least i think it is a problem) when it is running on LPG you get allot of white smoke from the exhaust which isn't present when it's running on proper petrol. Is that something that all LPG cars do or is it a fault I need to have checked?
It's not using any oil or water and has about 140k on the clock.
I have a fair amount of mechanical experience working on various old English cars (Morris Minors and MGBs mainly) this is a new area and i am a bit lost with it.

Either way I am impressed how much car you can get for less than a grand. It makes towing a car trailer a doddle even up a steep farm track it doesn't even hesitate.

If anybody can shed some light on it, it would be great!
Cheers,
Terry.

oh nuts, I was hoping it was something i could fix with a spanner. Never mind, ebay bargains always seem to come with a sting in the tail. Do you have any idea what I could expect to pay for a "known good" box?
Is adjusting an LPG kit something for a proper garage?

Hi Terry
As for the auto box change the oil and filter and put (lucas stop slip in it) link to web site Lucas Oil Products (UK) - Heavy Duty & High Performance Lubricants . Mine was sliping and clunky on changing up its sweet as a nut now.

As for the LPG thing you will need to get it looked at.
Hope it goes well for you good luck:rolleyes:

Hi Terry

Got an '89 Vogue. When I bought it the auto box sounded pretty rough, changed the oil and the filter screen and it's been smooth ever since.
When you say white smoke on LPG you sure it's not condensation? I run LPG and there's alot of white condensation when running on it.

I assumed it was smoke as it is always there no matter how long the car has been running for. It has a new MOT so it can't be that bad. 2 weeks of ownership and 1500 miles, despite these niggly faults it goes like a tank!

I have been reading around the forums on here and googling the web to see if I can find a recomended gearbox oil. There seem to be lots of different opinions. Is there a "best" type of oil to use with my problem in mind or just whatever my local motorfactor has in stock?

No, it'll be condensation mate. Mine does it, you're effectively running a boiler burning gas. The guy at the garage who fitted the kit said that burning LPG produces lots of condensation, even when hot, so not to worry. Put your hand in the steam from the exhaust while she's running, should just feel like steam. If it's smoke you'll tell. Take off your oil filler cap while the engine is running as well, check for smoke. But if you say there aren't any problems and you're not using oil or water there's really nothing to worry about.

When i did the gearbox oil i just went to PartCo and bought enough oil for the box. They sell 5 litre bottles of it, nothing special, buy 2. Make sure you get a new filter/'o'ring/sump gasket etc for the job. Pretty sure you have to unbolt and knock out the front cross member to take the gearbox sump off. I did and it was a pain in the arse but the box was silky afterwards.

Good luck mate.

Sounds like I need to read HBOL when i get in and see how to go about changing the filter. It sounds like it's alot more involved than changing the engine oil.
Thanks for the advice.
