"Summed up": An intercooler (original UK term, sometimes aftercooler in US practice), or charge air cooler, is an air-to-air or air-to-liquid heat exchange device used on turbocharged and supercharged (forced induction) internal combustion engines to improve their volumetric efficiency by increasing intake air charge density through nearly isobaric (constant pressure) cooling. A decrease in air intake temperature provides a denser intake charge to the engine and allows more air and fuel to be combusted per engine cycle, increasing the output of the engine.

Taken from here

Basically: cools air, aair denser as it's cooler, more "air particles" per unit space available, so fuel combusts more completely, improving efficiency.

I have a 12J block and a 19J head -engine, and i have just recently rebuilded it. I hope this is a wise idea? It works good with white smoke continuously on start up and clears away during driving. I hope the white smoke will disappear went i get the new glow plugs.

i have got the lovely vm engine and i have found it a good engine for every thing from off roading to motorway driving
i am getting around 27 to 35 mpg all depending on my driving style but overal a good engine
every engine has its faults

Ive got a 1987 110 with a TD engine, seems nice to drive, definitely nowhere near as powerful as my mates Td5, still is a land rover and does the job so cant complain :)

going to look at the disco intercooler for sure, should be good craic ;) lol

i have a td engine 1987 in a 90 been refurbing an modding it for the past year an just done a 300 mile trip this weekend engine ran great but the 3 wheel nuts that are somewhere in north wales an a steering box seal that started leakin arent.

Got the 19j in mine with 168,000 on the clock get 60mph at a push but hates hills , dosnt burn any oil at all --- just leaks it out the bell housing gasket ---- looking for a 200 after I convert my brothers :) .

I had mine for about 4 years, it had a new head when I bought it & the only thing it needed in all that time were oil & filters. I think it was a good injun cos my mate had one at the same time & I'd leave him for dead on any motorway run, & as long as I kept one eye on the temp gauge she'd do a good 70 all day easy. :)

I had a td i had to pay the scrap man to take it away but covered under a tarpaulin to save repuatation BAD BAD BAD HORRIBLE ENGINE okay if you have got a oil well in your back gardern. mine leaked oil from every joint goin leaked desiel went through a air filter every 100 mile did 18 to the gallon list is endless

I've been driving mine for a year now and it's fine uses a bit of oil. but it starts with in 5 seconds of cranking it over (20 secs of glow plugs) will do 70 at a push but regularly does an 80mile round trip without any probs at all.

I have a TD in a 110 Hreg (1991) which has me a bit miffed. ...as my lad has a 110 Greg (1990) which has a 200tdi fitted standard:mad: how does that work?

It's ok for pottering around though...but yeh, it does leak a tad:D

I've got one, 'cos I can't afford anything better. Goes well, starts (with lots of heat) if you ask it nicely, doesn't lose or burn oil and potters along quite nicely at 65. I have had more out of it (70plus) and I got the teethmarks on the steering wheel to prove it! Handles like a feckin' boat:D

Nothing wrong with a 19j if you look after it well. Mine fine (I've had 70mph without screaming it and over 35mpg on a run.) and I know of two that have over 200k miles on them and haven't been apart yet.

35 on a run!!!!! I'm lucky to get 24 out of mine. That is with 235/85R16 tyres fitted so the speed is spot on with my gps.

Regards
John

I also have this engine. My last 90 was an N/a. Is there anyone out there who can do engine transplants with a 200Tdi? Ive been told that theres some modding invold with use of donnor parts. Any quoteswould be great.

Eventually gets to 55 but 2nd gear on hills is just embarassing!!!!

I've got a 110 19j and she's a beauty. Starts first time every time don't leak don't smoke. And she has got me out of some pretty sticky situations. Only got 50k on the clock and even with 33x12.5 tyres I get about 25-30mpg. Bit will be looking to drop a 200tdi in it as soon as I can find one cheap enough and rebuilt it.

Long live maggie the 110.
