Hi, read posts here for ages, only just signed up.

I have a 2009 2.4tdci 110 (3500kg gvw), it has a big Ramsey electric winch that I do not like, it's slow especially with a load and I have to have the engine running as I have no split charge battery etc. also it seems to heat up quickly with the use I give it.

Any good places to find secondhand hydraulic winches that run off the PTO output on the gearbox? Or are they like hens teeth? Alternatively anything a bit easier to swallow price wise than the mile marker PTO kit?

My landrover man said there is a crossmember that is in the way on 110/130s on the puma engine as they have moved the gearbox further back or something. Has anyone seen a PTO hydraulic pump fitted to a newish defender? Cut it out the way and weld something up?

Yeah thanks, not my thing though, would end up sounding like a lonely heart ad or something lol.

Thanks Thor, yes I've asked a couple of local breakers and a couple of defender part sellers I saw on eBay. They said they have nothing and don't get them often... I can't see any sold on eBay recently or for sale at the moment unless its for a series, or already bolted to an ex utility type truck. I did do a fookin' search, I found noone who's fitted a hydraulic winch to a 110/130 tdci (90 doesn't have the same cross member I believe) and no ideas on where to find them :)

What's it worth? :
New unused/ old stock superwinch (unknown model), PTO take off equipment, pipes and connectors etc.
From what I can tell all I need to get it fitted and running is:
Winch bumper, 12mm wire, roller fair lead.


Any input on fitting this to a tdci? Or any photos of where the Crossmember is in the way?

Have a look online for power take offs. They bolt to the engine and use the current belts.

For the record if you are winching you should always have your engine running anyway for safe working practise (unless its bust).

With a hydraulic pto, engine will have to be running anyhow for it to work.

If you remove the ramsey pm me. I am in the market for one for a working vehicle

Thanks for the reply. Battery is rubbish so I run my engine with the electric one anyway...

I have seen the engine mounted kits, thanks. I'm more interested in the PTO kit as it would make a better winch, but also so I could have a half decent hydraulic auxiliary take off. Im very tempted by that kit I found, but the asking price seems a touch steep.

All depends on what you want to do. Remember with self recover is you use a snatch block will speed things up.

Tbh ramsey is a good make and ironically i bought a hydraulic one gor a song and sold it on because the hydraulic set up was so costly. Remember a hydraulic winch of good quality will set you back as much as an electric warn winch. Hydraulics are not fast either.
 
Hyd winchs are not cheap , they are designed for extended professional use , they are usually not that fast , as when winching in most situations speed can be dangerous , due to loads etc . Being pto driven you can vary speed not only by accelerator (ie engine speed , but also by what gear you are driving pto with eg 1 to 5 .
If there is not room to use arear pto on back of transfer box , then there was a bottom pto available to bolt onto bottom of lt230 transfer box HTSH

Thanks, hydraulic would be great for me, i think I'll get that kit even if I can't afford to get it fitted right now. I was told the bottom PTO is an option, but easily broken off road as it would hang low? I have no clue what transfer box I have TBH! (2.4 tdci)

We get them in at work I will have to look at the PTO set up next time one is in.

Matter of fact I just remembered I have seen one we did the clutch on and the PTO was in the normal place, I remember the tech moaning about having to remove the pump to get the box out and not given extra time.

Yes it was a 2.4 with the Ford six speed and LT230. The winch looks a real HD piece of kit, they have the control levers sticking out the wing. It all looks very expensive, ok if you are running cables all day long like these guys but a bit OTT for self recovery.

I've read of someone using a power steering pump for the hydraulic. Not the standard defender one. You could search eBay or a breakers for one of the correct flow rate and pressure.

Hydraulic winches give much greater control and so are slower than electric winches. It might be better to find the winch you want first. It might be worth going to utility company auctions. Western power use tdci and td5 defenders with hydraulic winches and they sell whole vehicles and equipment.
Find something similar to you.
 
I like the idea of a massive mechanical winch between the chassis rails at the rear something with a serious length of cable for serious recovery. Will keep an eye out for a tractor mechanical winch or maybe convert my Ramsey to a mechanical drive instead of electric
