hi guys,
i always have very random and stupid ideas and have had a new one.
im always looking to do something different and challenging,

ok so after watching tele the other nite ther was a wildcat on. i think it was scrap heap challenge, and it showd these hydraulic rams come out of the bottom and lift up the vehicle. i was wondering if any one has ever done this to a disco. if not would it be a good project to do or would it just be a waste of time & money. the rams are reasonabley cheep on flee bay.

Not a new idea, I first saw them fitted to an Austin 16 manufactured about 1950, there were 4, capable of lifting the corner of the car should the need arise to change a wheel, I have never seen the idea used on any other car,

so it is possible. well i know it is i seen it on the bowler. wonder wat modds id have to do, i was thinking cut a hole in the floor at the side of chassis. put the ram in, weld to chassis, and mount the hydraulic pumps in the rear. 1 on each side in the middle.

The system Pete C refers to was the Jackall system.

I think it's a great idea.

Get bogged in some ruts, hit a switch, car jacks itself up... throw some rocks and tree branches underneath... hit another switch, car lowers, you drive away!

If you decide to do it, make sure you send us lots of pictures of the build..!

Don't either the British Touring Cars or American Indy cars use a similar, air-powered system?

Be a lot less messy if it fails ...

touring cars use some kind of jacking system, either hydrolic or air powered. saves alot of time and transporting of jacks and so on. a touring car chassis is only in the region of 6-8 inches off the ground tho so short length rams are all thats needed, a disco chassis is well over double that so the rams would need to be pretty strong to safely lift 2 ton of weight 18"+ into the air

cant see a potential use in a disco tho apart from tyre changes on firm ground - if your stuck that means 4 wheels have become bogged down in soft/muddy ground, so your rams would have to have VERY large base plates to lift 2 ton of car without sinking into the same soft ground.

I know that aircraft pushback tugs (the real big 'uns) are fitted with an actuator on each corner.

well ive decided im going to give it ago, im going to start collecting all the parts and will start it in just over a mnths time when i move in to the new house with the garage, ill get lots of pics guys so watch this space. ;-)
