Hi all, I brought a nice little project from Wales , I got a nice tappet noise and I drove for 4hrs and its still there!
I replaced the oil and filter and yes it's still there.

I brought a set of tappets today, un bolted rocket cover, but when I went to set it to tdc I can't see any timing marks?
Is there a guide any were of how to replace tappets?

….................,.,.....................
So all excited I inspected it properly, I found a few other issues

- There's diesel leaking out the rear of the pump

- The high range don't engage when button is pressed no light either.

- front driver window motor slipping

- also got these dash faults;
Front driver window not set
Front passenger window not set
Alarm fault
Srs air bag fault
Neutral transfer

The driver side has no heating but passenger side does, got a pic of a book on heater display.

We're to start? Lol

Look forward to any info and help

first download a copy of you rave then read owners handbook about setting the windows It also helps if you read the give us a clue thread at the top of the page

Go to my "How to" at top of page scroll down to workshop manuals link and download RAVE. Read it. You have to remove camshaft to replace tappets. You will need a locking pin to set TDC number one, a special tool to release tension from chain tensioner and pins to hold it in place, also a special tool to position camshaft on reassembly. It is by no means a straight forwards job IF you don't know what you're doing. Reading the rest of your post you have a lot of work ahead of you.

Lol thanks for all the advice and help so far, I normally use autodata but our pc has died, so had a little search here 1st and see a post saying you could remove the camshaft without pulling most of the engine about using a coat hanger to release the tension on the chain, but couldent see any visible timing marks.
Just wanted to know if there was a simple quick way to to remove camshaft with out striping it down, I've now put autodata on my laptop and can see the coat hanger logic but its by far safe. Ill pull it apart tomorrow, I've not got the locking tools so ill just make some tomorrow.
Any one local to me with a spare pump as I'm not gonna be able to get a replacement gasket/seal till after Xmas to repair the pump.

Would just fit the 330d m57 engine I built but don't think the p38 transfure box or running gear will take the 520lbs of torque it's pushing out lol

If you drove around for 4 hours - was this all in low range then???

I am guessing it is a manual as the Auto don't have a ratio change button....

The button needs to be out without the light on for High Range, and pressed in with light for low range...

To change ratios, you must be at a standstill, in neutral with engine running....

Also if you have the Transfer Neutral message, this means there is a fuse in position 11 forcing the Transfer Box into neutral...which surprises me if you have driven it for 4 hours...this leads me to think that the Transfer motor and/or switch pack is duff!

Think you'd be better with a copy of RAVE on your laptop to be honest. There are no timing marks.

Going to download rave today and have a study.

I see a fues missing in f11 so put one in it, just see on autodata it's for towing lol
There's a plug on driverside engine bay that is unplugged? If I plug it bk in the gearbox selects high range and the button won't disengage it untill I unplug it?

Take Fuse 11 out....

If you read my post Fuse 11 is to put the Transfer Box into neutral for towing purposes, you said you have Transfer Neutral message - I indicated to see if there was a fuse in position 11 which will put it into Transfer Neutral.!!

If you still get drive with a fuse in 11, you have an issue with the Transfer Box motor or ECU
