Hello all. I'm afraid I have not contibuted too much to the forum and being the cheeky sod that I am, I'm begging for some help!

My 95 Disco 1 300 Tdi (109000miles) has plenty of grunt when the turbo kicks in but there is a monster amount of nothingness before it does. Am I just being a little too expectant or does this suggest a problem?

the engine runs very sweetly and the turbo sounds fine although I have not checked it other than admire the sound.

All suggestions gratefully received!!

my suggestions is get used to it....
Have you driven a 300TDI disco before? Do you know what to expect? If not find a mate with one and drive that to get something to compare it to.

PS..Put your location in, there might be someone local to you who can help
 
you could always give the pump a tweak as long as its not an auto.This will improve the low end power by quite a lot.

This might indicate a sluggish injection pump boost device, or even a split or fault in the black plastic pipe from the turbo outlet to the injection pump. It's a stiff pipe about the size of windscreen washer tubing. Find it and check it.

The injection pump BOOST diaphragm is prone to getting grotty inside, and is easy to clean.

A few small screws and the cover comes off.

Another thing to check is that the turbo waste-gate is CLOSING fully. If it is stuck open even a little the boost will be very slow to come up.

I have a 1994 Discovery with the same engine as yours and with very similar mileage and I would have thought it sounds about right. Mine has an amount of nothingness especially when cold, but once the turbo kicks in all seems good. What you have to remember here is is that a Disco is no sports car or even an average car, its a 2 ton lump of metal that requires a fair amount of zumph to get it going. I would say that mine performs much better when it is warm. The only thing that may concern me is your use of the words "monster amount of nothingness". You make it sound as if you have so little power that your having a job moving it!

This happened to our's, noticed a slight drop in grunt over a couple of week's when the turbo kicked in ... until the hose went pop with a massive screech (we thought we'd run over a dog:eek:).

Initially I thought the turbo had died so limped home ... that took ages as the 300 engine is absolutely gutless without the turbo. But after 5 min's on here I realised it might be the turbo hose's, turns out the hose had split due to old age ... changed all the turbo hoses's and it was a major transformation from when it was running with the old one's.

My 300 tdi auto on a 98 plate flies off the mark especially when cold, in fact I think its a little bit quicker than my TD5 initially. It is even quick with the caravn on the back. The only mod done is the EGR removal thing and clean out the intercooler. I'm in Bristol and spend a considerable time in Cheddar, Somerset, so if thats near to you and want to try mine, let me know, you would be welcome.
 
Mines a 97 with 150k tends to be a little slow unless pushed (not literally) get up to 2500rpm in it really shifts, don't know if thats normal or not!!!!

This suggests the fuelling is a bit light until the turbo starts to blow hard.

If the low revs fuelling was increased a bit, the thing would pull better from the off, and the turbo would start to blow hard sooner.

it can be done ...

we have the technology!

It involves di-lithium crystals of course.

if thats more involved than changing a light bulb than i'm clueless!!!!

Di-lithium crystals is that them things that come in those little bags to keep the moisture out, usually get em stuffed in with small electronic things???:confused:

It's a manual and I'm in Lancaster.

I've just driven by brothers and they are not too different. I think it is more my inexperience than a problem, but I'm gonna look at all the advice given! Well chuffed at such a good response!! I'll let you know what occurs!!

My 300 TDi is very sluggish when cold, but when the blower starts to kick in at around 1500 rpm things get better. It is always much better when warm even at the bottom end before the turbo comes out to play. I have removed the EGR & removed the cat. Has K&N filter and Safari Snorkel. Have had a true 100 mph out of it (took a looooong time, but got there eventually) verified by the sat/nav. :D:D
