hi folks

As you might of guessed, for some reason my '98 disco has an uneven tick-over. It's done it since I got it standard and still does it after mild tweaking just the same, as soon as I add any revs it smooths out but when moving slowly it makes the whole vehicle lunge and it's most annoying and it also does it when going on or off the throttle when moving unless I 'roll' on or off very gently.

I'm wondering if there is any sort of balance type set up in the IP, or has anyone any other ideas please.

The lift pump is new and I've replaced one washer on the sedimenter due to air ingress

Thanks for any advice

if theres a good air free supply of fuel to ip pump it could be worn head in fuel pump or injectors

Cheers for replies

She's a really good starter to be honest, at any time of the year, whether it's been left a few days or not, hot or cold and with just the usual quick puff of black smoke she starts with a quick flick of the key

The tick over is maybe a tiny bit high but it's not far off but the hunting gets worse if I turn it down any more and stops if I turn it up. I've reset the tick over since turning the fuel up a bit but it does the same thing

Strangely and maybe totally erelevant but I've driven a lot of discos over the years and mine seems to need the throttle pedal pressing further for things to happen, like the cables loose but it's not, it's just strange???

Well I tried an injector cleaner and It made a slight difference to general running but no difference to the hunting problem.

Forgot to mention before, it doesn't happen for the first 10 seconds or so after first start up, it runs smooth and normal to start with and then again after it settles. Also, after a couple of minutes of running, the revs raise just a bit to a slightly higher tick over

If anyone has any advice about any of this, or just some general knowledge about the IP I'd be really grateful

Thanks

I don't know how much experience you have with fault finding, so if your like me (everythings a first time so learning as I go) then this may help:
Spent 6 hours fault finding to find out there was a bit of twig in my pick up pipe in the tank. It would get sucked up and run rough as buggery after the first minute or so of driving. Overnight the twig would loosen in the pick up pipe. It was tapered fit, you see.

Anyway, so what James Martin has said is check for air in the lines. I tested the lift pump, the filter, the pump and injectors, then went back to basics. To test each thing I just bypassed it (to bypass liftpump I used an in tank 12v pump connected to cigarette lighter socket).

Completely wrong way round - as its usually the simplest thing that causes a problem. Bit of clear pipe between the filter and lift pump should help. In the end I put new clear fuel lines from tank to IP and have them running next to my seat so I can see if there's air in them.

Let me know if pictures may be handy

Cheers for the post

I've been into the tank not long since expecting a load of horribleness but it was like new in there so I blew the lines thru and was happy with that, and I've looked about and pressurised the tank which found my air ingress point last time but I can't find anything this time. I'm looking for some clear pipe to go between the filter and IP as well. To be honest everything is telling me it's something to do with the IP somewhere

No mate nothing really, I haven't found a good set up to put clear pipe in the IP feed pipe and although the injector cleaner made a bit of difference it did nothing for this problem. To be honest I was hoping for some advice on here really, I did think about ringing a couple of spots but they usually just say 'bring it in we'll have a look'. Don't really know wot to do apart from try another pump

Cheers

Well I've fitted some clear pipe and the fuel feed is that good that the clear pipe just looks empty, not a bubble in sight.

There must be people on here with knowledge about the pumps???

Cheers

Good evening, long time no see how's things?

I've tried doing it different ways to be honest but at the moment I've settled with a bit on the star wheel and a bit on the main screw, I can't remember if the pin is at standard or not but I've got it all written down in the car. It's done this since I got it as a totally standard car previously owned by a woman tho

Could be on account of an imbalance in the injectors.....one or multiple injectors lifting or opening at lower or higher pressures than others. Maybe it's time you had the injectors serviced and pressure tested if you haven't yet had that done in the past few years. Easy enough to do and to rule that out.

Yes well the injectors are my second thought to be honest, and no I haven't touched them apart from putting a cleaner thru them. Are 200 injectors the same I can't remember, I have a mate who just reconditioned and fitted new nozzles to his but then took the motor out.

It's manual Nate

Injectors differ between the 200 and 300... After years and years of running, at a point the injectors need to be serviced at the very least with replacement nozzles and recalibrated.

Cheers. Yeah well she's just done 100k so they have seen a bit of action and it might be time for a freshen up. I did think about an air leak in a pipe but it doesn't do it all the time. It doesn't do it for the first few seconds after start up but then it starts doing it and it usually settles after a while until I drive slowly then it starts and makes the whole vehicle lunge
