As the title states.

Is it going to be a wheel bearing or is it going to be VCU?

How can I find out please?

The noise starts at just over 30mph and gets louder as I speed up.

I cant say that I notice it as much at 70mph +

Its like a humming sound if that makes sense.

Paul.

I am starting to regret buying this car now....

I have read many threads on this site and I am a little put off the vehicle now.

I only got the damn thing yesterday too.

I had a test drive last weekend and noticed the clutch was knackered and the rear bushes needed replacing so I got all that done.

When driving home yesterday I noticed the humming noise. I cant say I heard it on the test drive for some reason....

So I got home and had a look through the wallet containing the manuals etc and the bloody card is missing with the keycode security numbers on etc.

Anyway.. Back to the VCU, I will be trying the tippex test when it stops raining.

EDIT: I have tried the tippex test and after a quick drive around the block I had another look to find that the lines are now misaligned.. I take it this means it isnt a seized VCU?

What bearings would I change anyway? Is it the 2 either side of the VCU held in place by brackets?

Remove the rear prop shaft and VCU. Run it in mondo mode (front wheel drive only ) if the noise is still there it isn't the bearings on the VCU/ prop shaft.

I purchased a haynes manual for the freelander today.

It says in the manual to make alignment marks on the prop shaft flanges at the IRD and final drive. ( what are the flanges ) lol

If it drive it without the propshaft at all wont it mean it will be out of alighnment when I refit it?

does that make sense?

Could be your tyres... put spare on right rear and see if noise is gone. Else swop tyres front and rear and see if noise moves from back to front. Could be caused by a flat spot/uneven wear on circumference (tread) of tyres.

I have removed the propshafts and VCU and the noise is still there.

I have also swapped the wheels around too.

I am thinking its the final drive making the noise?

Is it supposed to make a noise though?

it might be me being used to my old megane and now moving onto a freelander I am noticing noises?

I had the exact same problem - and even replaced the rear diff. Turned out to be a wheel bearing. In the end I went to my LR dealer, who diagnosed for free and quoted £246 per side fitted. I got a local independent garage to replace both rears for £170 all in.

Its really difficult to diagnose, but there was a scraping noie when the rear wheels were rotated. (only possible with prop disconnected - I too remove dthe VCU to test)

Hope you get it sorted matey

Regards,

Steve
