Ok so rain and darkness has defeated me tonight on my front wheel bearing change.
Everything was ok until i went to put the hub back on. It wont go all the way on as the inner bearing is getting stuck on the stub axle.
Watched the videos it just appears to slide on, but mine doesnt. Am i missing something?
Its probably a good inch off. I have pulled it back off and it has pulled the seal out leaving the seal and inner bearing on the stub axle. The inner bearing is now stuck on there and wont pull off.

Any suggestions as to why it wont just slot on

Did you tap the new bearing in to the hub properly? It should be tight fit in there and not just pull out. It does look like they just slide on, but they need to be offered to the stub axle nice and square and then gently slid on. There is a little bit of a knack to it, but normally they just take a little bit of a slight maneuvering to get them to slide on.

Races are knocked in and tight. The actual rollers are not knocked in, the inner is held by the seal and the outer by the flat washer and adjusting nuts.

Ill have another look in daylight but its as though the centre diameter of the bearing is to small to go over the stub axle

if bearing is sticking part way up the stub youd need to clean stub axle till it slides on and off by hand before fitting bearing back in hub

Quick check...have you got the right bearing kit....early ones had different size inner and outer bearings

From memory mine took some very very gentle taps (circular motion) from the rubber mallet to get it started, slotted on nicely once the first bit got on. It is a precise fit.

The old bearing probably seized at some point and wore a bit of a shoulder onto the stub axle. Sand it down a little bit. Getting it turned down on a lathe would be the best route to take but some careful sanding cannot hurt.

What brand are the bearings and stub axle (if changed)?

I’ve seen this problem several times caused by cheap crappy parts being used for either one or both of the above.

Happened to me with new bearings and Brand new stub axles, think it was some grit or something on them but after a bit of sanding and trying all of a sudden it just slid on to my relief, there is a Knack to it.

Timken bearings.

It will be the shoulder as the old inner bearing completely collapsed and i needed a new hub due to damage. Stub axle looked undamaged but it was dark, waiting for my next daylight day off

ok, ive had half an hour of daylight to look today. the bearing is going all the way back on the stubb axle to the lip now, turn out though that even after that not enough of the threaded part sticks out to get the first adjustment bolt on, let alone the second. will have an hour or so light tomorrow to look but just trying to figure out whats going on.

bothe races are fully seated all the way in, the inner bearing is all the way to the lip on the stub axle. i have changed the hub, but i presume its the same hub as the depth is the 2 races and the half inch bit that bands between the 2 races.

am i missing something obvious

wow!!!
next level stupidity on my behalf.

as the inner bearing had collapsed the inner part of the bearing remained welded on the stub axle.

having not done one before i didnt realise as it was so clean and perfectly welded there is looked like it was actually part of the stub axle body.

no wonder it wouldnt go on.

anyway after a fair amount of violence with a copper hammer, its off and sorted.

just thought id update incase anyone else is as blind as me.
