Hello all,
Looking for a bit of info or help please.
After a recent crash I am now the somewhat proud owner of a very lovely 54 plate HSE TD4 auto. She’s a real beauty. Black, leather seats, no scuffs or dings. I really like her. My only pet peeve is her MPG!
I have to drive shorter roads daily, it can’t be helped. I’ve not got clutter or unnecessary items in the boot, I try not to be heavy footed, I don’t use the AC. But if this carries on then our time together will be short - I just can’t go on spending £60 a week on diesel, when her predecessor, a rather lovely manual TD4, was quite a lot better! Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks

The auto TD4 does about 28 Mpg, if it's mainly on slow or winding roads. Once on the motorway at a steady 70, the Mpg climbs to over 35 Mpg. Unfortunately automatic boxes aren't efficient at driving the vehicle at slower speeds, as the torque converter slips quite a bit, which wastes fuel.

So basically there’s nothing I can do unless I change my job and have to drive motorway miles? :(

Do you have one to swap? :p Thanks for your help. I did think that would be my only real option, and I appreciate your quick replies to my thread

Normally the auto TD4 HSE commands a higher price than the manual HSE, so you might be able to find a suitable replacement for slightly less money. ;)

And no. I'm going to be selling my auto, and going to a manual myself.

Yes, she was a bit more expensive than the other auto, a 55 plate SE that I looked at, but she’s a real beauty so it’s not surprising. Might have to seriously consider changing to a manual

If it's any help I can backup Nodge's stats. My 05 HSE TD4 auto does about 28 on routine driving around. I have managed ~40 on 60mph motorway runs though

You can also help your self by making sure your car is serviced good, clean manifold, clean EGR & map sensor, clean air filter, oil filter and change of oil, make sure the thermostat is working as it should as they start to fail by opening early thus not letting the temperature to get up to what it should therefore the engine is not running at its optimum.

Drop in at our meet this weekend Four Ashes just off the A449 not far from Telford I/we can give it a once over for you, if you like any help or work carried out at the meet is FOC.

Now that's an offer well worth taking up.;)

Good advice here too.

Worth doing the one wheel up test to see if transmission is tight wasting fuel. Also fill up with fuel and record miles to next fill up to work out actual mpg then report back! The Arctic team can help show a one wheel up test I would imagine!!
