Hi guys, my name is Kevin from Ireland have a freelander 1.8 :/ been through 2 head gaskets can siezed clutch release shaft. Have searched this forum Hi and low, and haven't found an answer. Am dumbfounded as to what's up with it now I was taking off at a set of lights changed from first to second and had no drive to the wheels. Was literally like the clutch wasn't engaging.

Long story short I pulled the gearbox off as I assumed it was the pressure plate was the cause... Pressure plate Seamed find along with the gearbox

Put it all back together and jacked the front wheels up put car in gear and no drive to front wheels but the rear crown wheel going to rear prop was spinning .. I have the rr prop removed...

I decided that it was obviously the ird causing the issues pulled off the offside wheel an popped th drive shaft out of the ird low and behold the drive shaft was sheared off. I removed the ird and it seems to be ok but surely if the offside drive shaft was sheared the the nearside should have still been driving the car? Anyone have an idea?

Drive will be lost if one side of the diff has no resistance, on front wheel drive cars without abs you can jack the car up one side and put in gear and let clutch out- unless limited slip diff and rev'd it won't go anywhere.

Your gearbox is PG1 variant I guess crown wheel teeth sheared

there is an inner and outer spline drive into the gearbox.

one of these may be stripped or the splines in the gearbox itself may have stripped or the planetary gears in the front diff (located within the ird) may have come out of mesh due to excessive wear.

Hope this helps

Thank you for your speedy response! You reckon something is gone in the gearbox? Or would I get away with just replacing the drive shaft?

The inner and outer splines on the ird seem ok and the planetary gears in the ird seem hunky dory.

Will have another look inside the gearbox and see if the inner and outer splines are intact.

Thank you for all the help, beginning to learn a lot about freelanders!

if you have output at the rear prop, and alls apparently well with the aforementioned, i can only guess that the layshaft in the ird has snapped.
i haven't heard of this occurring before though.

report back on your findings ;)

From when I pulled the gearbox out I checked the splines in the gearbox and all seemed to be fine will check tomorrow again to be sure,

The layshaft is that the shaft that goes from the inner splines to the planetary gears?

Everything seems in order in the ird (from my very limited knowledge-no damage to teeth, shiney bits or obvious abnormalities etc but it's my first time looking at one-and I don't really know what I'm looking at )

The layshaft cannot be the problem coming to think about it cos you have rear drive.

my money is on the diff or splines from experience.

Will have a root at it tomorrow evening and report back, thanks so much for your help!

Surely the snapped drive shaft is all that's wrong?

Can't seem to find any other issues, I don't understand how one snapped drive shaft would cause complete loss of drive to both front wheels - the rear prop is removed

you know what DT I just completely missed that bit last night

yes the snapped driveshaft is responsible for loss of drive to the front, of course.

I have 3 spare front driveshafts and if you're near Sheffield you can have one...GRATIS ;)

Will replace the drive shaft ASAP and hopefully that will be everything sorted out with it for another while fingers crossed! Thanks for the offer of the drive shaft but I'm in Ireland lol! Will report back and let you guys know how I get on

Ok ;)

sorry no worries

can't believe i didn't see that last bit

Had pull out the ird anyway to get the sheared bit of the drive shaft out anyway so all good

Still can't get my head around why the drive to the nearside was stopped from the offside prop snapping...

What oil does the ird take? I have the old stuff I drained out still but after going this far would be rude not to change it!
