hey all,

just joined and thought id say hi!

not too sure where to put this so i just thought id put it in here...

ok, so my brother has a discovery1 which has a thatcham cat 1 alarm and immobiliser fitted. no matter what i do i cannot get the engine to start, i think the immobliser is stuck on, ive tried everything i can think of from resetting the alarm (which dosent seem to do anything) do disconnecting the battery which dosent make any difference!:confused:

any advice on this issue is greatly welcomed, as its his only car!

thanks in advance!

kieran.

Does your alarm have its own battery? On my Astra MK4 it has a power sounder alarm and after 3 or 4 years you must change the powerpack.

So....you have a car without the transponder????

Does it have the key symbol flashing on the dashboard when you put the key in the ignition?

For any after-market immobiliser to work it must break into the original wiring or system somewhere. Track the wiring back and revert to normal.

All Disco's had quite a decent alarm fitted. It sounds suss that an aftermarket one replaced it.

first off, thanks for the quick responce!

the alarm system is the standard one fitted to all discoverys a garmin thatcham catergory1.

the disco worked fine before, it just stopped working one day. the process is as follows;

the fob still works unlocking the central locking, when the second fob is touched to a small flashing, red, metal disk on the dash the light goes out, then i put the key in and get all of the correct ignition lights up, then the engine should start but nothing happens.

as for its own battery i dont know and have no clue where i might find it (any suggestions)

as for where i am, do you mean location? if so, im in medway kent.

thanks again

sounds more like a dodgy connection on the starter motor fly lead to me. Check to see if it's getting a live feed or not before you begin messing about with the alarm.

It's not the starter motor or fly lead checked them already, its a 1993 L reg and has two buttons on the fob

That's odd. I thought the changeover year was 1995. The cars before then, had a 1 button fob; and afterwards have a 2 button.

If yours is indeed the 2 button fob then it will also have 2 indicating lights on the dashboard. The round LED bottom middle, and a car with a key on it (top right). The second one is the indication that the engine is immobilised. You can test it by removing the fob off the keyring, and inserting the key and turning the ignition on while the fob is a good distance away from the car (so it cannot make a passive radio connection to override the immobiliser).

If you have a non-standard alarm, then I can't help you!

LR used the single button fob until late 96, therefore I reckon the system on this particular Disco has been modified in some way.
