Hi guys,

I'm new to the forum, and to the delights of owning a P38.

Mine is possibly a quite funny story.

I live in the country and have just rented an office space on the farm. The war departments car needed changing and I wanted something a little different to go and play in and use in the winter season. The other night I got a little tipsy and went on eBay looking at Land Rovers. I saw a 98 110, and thought it was still going quite cheaply. Being a first class idiot I thought, I wonder how high the current highest bidder has gone. I'll put in a few bids. A bit of a game of ebay Chicken. How high can I go before I stop bidding.

First bid...outbid.

Second Bid....outbid.

Third bid I went large. Now leading. 2 days later I was still leading.

Luckily this afternoon I was outbid. It is still cheap with 24 hours left to go so someone may get a bargain.

I stopped in at the local RR dealer with a friend who needed a couple of parts for his mkIII RR, and was telling the sales manager about my close call. Not to worry, he said, I took just the thing in part exchange this morning. You can have it for what I paid plus a days shooting, so I don't have to clean it or put it to auction or out through the network.

Went out for Ink for the printer and came back with a P38 2.5 DHSE with 117000m on a 51 plate.

Now all I have to do is tell the wife.

Well at least there should be enough room to sleep in the DSE if the wife throws you out, apart from that if the rangie has been looked after you should have a comfortable ride. But it could cost a bit to get up to scratch.

Now if you go back to "User CP" and state your location it'll help when you need more help as there maybe someone close to you.

3.5k with nine month MOT and an hour with a good divorce lawyer...

It was surreal.

Sales manager, 'Wow, suspension, aircon and even the electric mirrors work when you go in reverse. I was going to lend you a screwdriver to make sure you could get into the fuel cap on the way home, but that is working too. You do realise there is no warranty don't you?"

In all seriousness I think I got a good deal. everything seems to work at the moment and the body only has the usual dents and bumps for a 10 year old.

Divorce will only be on the cards if she realises I blew the budget she didn't know I had set.
 
Economical with the true cost then, been there done that,,,,, it was a real bargain, dear....;)
 
Mine was nowhere near as interesting, apart from the person I was buying it off (well, his wife) was the rudest arrogant fat woman I've ever had the misfortunte of dealing with! She actually told me to sod off at one point! Apparently I spent too long checking it over - it was about half an hour. Hmm...
 
My woman knows that my P38 and her P45 are closely related if she decides to kick off,as long as I don't spend more time servicing my toys than I do servicing her she remains quite well balanced.
I picked up a 99 DSE last month for £2700,120k in above average/clean condition all round,2000 miles later it remains fault free other than a intermittent hydraulic lifter sound,I'm just psyching myself up to rebuild the head before the summer's gone.
Your P38 is CAP black book priced at £4975 in good/clean condition and £4425 in average condition so I'd say you've done well but then I guess you don't need me to tell you that,congratulations on your purchase.

I'd have told her what to do with it. :D and walked away. Bad enough buying a P38 without the hassle of buying from some ignorant biddy.
I fell in love with my dhse from the picture on the internet. (not ebay) and it was just as good in the flesh. Even got tax and half tank of fuel - cos in tank fuel pump not working!!! Still a beautiful car.

Awesome! That's pretty much half what I paid for mine 9 months back :clap2:
 
mine is not as interesting but here goes

once my landcruiser started to cost me money and was becoming less reliable - it was 15 years old after all

I mentioned this to a mate of mine who said he knew of a friend of a friend who had been trying to sell a P38 but was having no luck.

I went to see it and it turned out that she had lost her husband after a prolonged illness and they used the RR to tow the caravan. She had no problems selling the caravan but not a sniff when it came to the car with only 1 viewer and him saying it wouild cost too much to run.

Anyway, all she knew about it was that they had it for ages and it was blue. I had a look and was presented with a 2001 4.6 vogue. it had 2 owners from new (last one for 7 years) full LR history and only 80K miles on it. I took it out for a run and tried everything and it all worked apart from the sat nav.

I asked how much she wanted and I paid her the full asking price of £3K

It's in my local indy garage this week for the lpg fitting but I'm a very happy puppy and think I got a bargain

Yep! It was my Mothers and her new fella and they mugged me right off for what I thought was a bargain at the time (whether they knew or not I tend not to think about ;-) )...Gone wrong about once a month ever since, wished I'd kept my fabulous old '97 4.0l Grand Cherokee, great to work on, very little to go wrong, better mpg, more comfortable, as good off road (near enough), etc...The only thing wrong with it was the air con which I need for the dogs really...YET, now I have a RR I'm not sure i'd go back, now if you can explain that to me??!! HA HA
 
I work in an LPG garage working on p38's all day long, saw a range rover on ebay but didn't bid on it because the seller wanted collection within 48 hours (I lived 200 miles from the car) e-mailed the seller and said if the winning bidder mess's about I'd be intrested, a day or so later I got an invoice sent to me for the car, went down on the train toped up oil and water, 250 miles home and still going strong with many little faults :( all good fun tho, only paid £600 for the car with coil conversion just need to LPG it to make it cheaper to run
 
I came to own my early P38 because some local yobbo's tried to steal it, and failed.. I got offered it for £500... Might have been a mistake but i bought it, it's got most of its service history, a gas conversion, 10 months MOT and 2 months tax, so i figured it was worth it..

It arrived at my house being towed by a Hyundai...

It's been in my garage for a few months now, sorted out most of it - from what I can make out the EAS needs resetting (Need to fix the OBD port), needs an oil pressure switch and then it should be good to go.

All in all a cheap P38 - but realistically speaking it's never gonna be worth much, it's a bit tatty, mostly due to the Intergalactic mileage. (250K)
 
well, saw a L322 on fleabay in a dealers - viewed it and snapped it up straight away. never traded in a freelander so quickly lol.

it was sold to me as a HSE, i was expecting the base model as you do hence the cheaper listing price, and hay-ho it has every possible optional extra it could have had ! - im well chuffed ! so got a vogue for the price of a HSE :D

only difference is the lack of Sat nav from which i have heard are'nt that great anyway !

I bought my first RR nearly 20 years ago from a guy who advertised it in the local paper. He was selling it for a friend , who had mislaid 90% of the service history........... - but it was a beautiful looking car so I bought it and never looked back.
About 3 years later my secretary moved house and when she told me her new address it turned out to be next door to the vendor of my car - she told me he had just been nicked by Trading Standards for running a very dodgy second hand car business from his house.
It was still a great car though, I kept it for 10 years !
 
My first RR was a two door (1978), bought it from a dealer near Warwick in 1988 - basically because I'd always wanted one. It had LPG conversion which didn't work very well so I ripped it out and got 50% of the load space back instantly! I took it to Scotland on a camping trip and it broke down about four times on the way and each time the AA got it going again! The cost of petrol was horrendous and despite sterling service in a very bad winter (I think it was 1990?????) it had to go. Replaced it with a 1.6 Cavalier!

My current baby is just the result of not getting it out of my system and living in a place where petrol is cheap, the jungle and beach are literally next door and the kudos of having one of only two P38's in a town the size of Oxford which is full of Pajero's, LandCruisers and other odds n sods of 4WD pick-ups.
 
I was looking for something diesel to do motorway miles, and therefore not pile them on to the wifes brand new small hatch - my brother has had Disco's for ever, and when she piped up " what about a nice Disco, as we got snowed in last year" I started looking for a Td5 - then bumped into mine when searching 'Land Rover' and 'Diesel' - went and looked, genuine motor, less than 100k, 12 months tax and MOT - why not? - was as simple as that.
You're not far from where I just moved to in Sunny Wilts!
