I have the suspicion that the xyz switch is not 100% oke. It is an automatic gearbox td5 disco 2. The engine will not start due to the BCU relay not closing the starter circuit. i have checked al kind of wires and even changed the bcu. no improvement. however when i take of the cover from the gearshifter on and wiggel it when turning the key the engine starts 3 or 4 times and than no more.

anybody got experience with a test for the xyz without buying a new item and finding this was nit the issue?
 
Wiring is where I'd be looking first. If your vehicle has air con it drains into the switch and plug. Would suggest by the renoval of the centre console and the wiggle that's its wiring.

gear shift cable might be worn or it may of come loose ..removing the covers on may of allowed you to have some more slight movement
I would be inclined to jump underneath and loosen the gear cable and allow it to slide freely ..then select the desired position manually by the lever on the side of the transmission
gear selection should tell you on the dash regardless of centre console position

make sure there is no coins jammed any where in the centre console

I use to get random M S lights flashing that lead to an xyz switch ...I drilled out the rivets and opened up the xyz switch.... most of the sliding contacts had carboned up also there was signs of water corrosion but no water ..... I cleaned all contacts and bent the pins slightly to it had a better contact ...I used 3/16 rivits with washers to seal back up the switch

since i don't want to remove my xyz switch again i have drilled a hole into the side of the switch same size hole for a wd40 straw to fit into but i have sealed this small hole with a bit of silicon ...however i have never tested this yet my plan was to spray this every service but while i was removing i noticed the air con drip pipe location ...i ended up adding a piece of garden hose to my drip pipe from the air con and relocated the drip .. ...up to now touch wood the switch hasn't been touched for a long time

ps the xyz switch also runs to seals for the shaft if these are worn or fatigued the switch still be able to draw in moisture regardless how well you reseal the switch when assembling

try to find "nanoprotech electric" locally or order online where you can get cheaper and use that instead of WD 40 cos it's much better for the purpose , i'm using this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Nanoprote...074009?hash=item2cc58f7459:g:UHYAAOSwPh5ZMEf6 and i'm extremely pleased how it works, the fuseboxes and all exposed connectors are treated with it on mine, even the engine ECU (i dont have shares in it)

I normally stay away from wd40 ...it was good back in the day becouse this is all what was provided .... it easier to explain as wd 40 cans run the same size straws as others

Agreed - WD40 is mainly kerosine, :mad: :rolleyes: and IMHO outclassed by other products. I'm currently using Ambersil "stuff" ( they do quite a range ), and am very pleased with the results.

I'm also sure that anything recommended by Sierrafery will be the dogs doodahs.

I stick with a lanox inox spray specially on my jet ski ....I have had wd40 swell high tension leads also
 
Thanks to all for your guidance and ideas. I could not resist to wait until the weekend and have check out the harnass and also the xyz switch under the car. I have concluded it is not a wiring problem but a water ingress problem. This is 99% conclusion based on the fact that the park/Neutral signal was not changing but when i wiggled the switch I saw a change from offf to on state on my nanocom, I checked wheter teh car woulkd start and yes it would (not starting was my origenal issue) then I measured the voltage on the xyz leads (which were read correctly by the BCU in all cases) the voltage on all 4 leads was 10,6 volt not the normal 12 which it should be so there is leagage somewhere and water is a conductor so I expect water ingress to be a fact.

I will source a new one and refurbish my current XYZ, I will prep the new one with nano fluid as per your answer sierafery, thanks for all your help.
 
Today the new XYZ switch installed. The old opened this was cork-dry. However, the pickup slider was a bit black, maybe burned and leaned a little back so that it did not hit the other side of the switch. In touch, this contact crumbled. This was clearly the problem. Unrepairable.
