I am looking at doing this to my VCU as currently I was unknowingly driving in RWD as my gearbox went kaput and towed another car almost 200 miles, either way VCU is cooked and I am wondering anyone that has done it. Is it worth it? I would need a vice, tapping kit and grease nipples along with the 100,000 cSt fluid, or should I just go with sending mine to bell for a recon one?

I am thinking of both short a long term costs here, I finally did the OWU test and the VCU didn't move it is like a rock, it has a little play in it but once you are through the play it is solid even when pushing on it, just not massively sure if the recon from Bell £85 if I send mind and £185 if I don't is going to be more cost effective both short and long term. Let me know though! I would be keen to try!

For £85 I wouldn't bother unless you're really keen to try. It is a lot of work and you need to buy the fluid.
Are you sure that is the price as it used to be a LOT more.
Have you a replacement IRD as it sounds like you need one?

Just taken a look and it's £185 for a recon and 285 if I don't send mine back would that change anything you mention?

I wouldn't say I want to go out of my way to do it but thinking long term it may be cheaper just want to drive the bloody thing.

IRD I have one I could take from my diesel TD4 but I replaced the gearbox already as the splines inside were sheared, I checked the IRD would there be an underlying issue with the IRD to cause the gearbox to shear its splines and send itself to heaven?

It's actually £272 with VAT and delivery, after you've sent your old one back and you'll want to do the bearings at the same time, so that needs factoring in.

I have to say that if I were in UK, I would defenetely send it to Bell because it's reallya a pain in the ass to repair it....

When the VCU stiffens up it puts stress on all parts of the transmission/drive train but normally it's the rear diff and/or IRD that fail.
