Hi all,

Quick question......all my wheel bearings have a real little bit of play in them, the front one tho especially has a fair bit of play but there is no rumbling from it, so what I'd like to know is how much play is acceptable in a wheel bearing and how much should I nip it up if taking out the free play.

Many thanks

Kyle

remove lock nut and tab washer ,and using a socket by hand tighten the nut up so you feel all free play has been removed back off and do it again youll feel when nut has removed the play

Also check that the play in the fronts isn't the swivel pins (play at 12 and 6 o clock)

Thanks very much for the quick answers chaps.

Blue beasty......do I not check wheel bearings at 12 and 6 o'clock position?

Thanks again

Wheel bearing wobble can be felt anywhere around the circumference but if it's just at 6 and 12 it's swivel pins

Beat me to it!

If you're in doubt about where the play is coming from then you can just pop the steering arms off the offending wheel and check again, play in the swivels will be very evident, stick your head under with the wheel safely jacked up and you'll probably see the play move the housing seal.

Cheers lads, I'm re check in morning but sure it's wheel bearing but thanks for heads up.

If it is swivel housing can this be adjusted?

Pull shims out, can rip thin ones out in situ without removing other bits and just loosening it up.

Yes but worth reading up on first, as said it's adjusted by adding or removing shims not just to remove play but to pre load the bearings and if wrong effects the feel of the steering.
