001 TD4 Freelander.

I possibly have a loose or dirty contact on the 12v supply into the Starter (sometimes the car starts, other times not even a click).

I have followed the Haynes manual as far as removing the main plastic engine cover, then removal of the battery and battery tray.

But then the book seems to go very quiet...all the Freelander variants, I just can't seem to make sense of it.. anyone oblige me on the next step?

I am just looking to get to the Starter's 12v wire to give it a shake and clean.

(car is not as yet up on jacks -do I need them?)

here's where I am up to... I posted this picture as there is a wiring loom sat under the removed battery tray, and the insulation covering has been chaffed close to the point of breaking the wires inside the loon (see red arrow). Just thought I'd mention that, out of interest I suppose..

or the ignition switch you can tell if it is this by bypassing it and running a wire of the battery positive to the stater motor teminal on the solenoid just touch it and it will go, have your ingnition switched on and OUT of gear if it does not start then it is the solenoid

my wife did have that problem about 10 years ago i cleaned the contacts in the ignition switch ( you have to dismantel it) with a bit of fine sandpaper , and she has had no trouble since.

Sorry for late closure of this thread. It was just a dirty/loose contact terminal on the 12v feed wire to the starter. Removed, cleaned, Vaseline'd, no problems since - and fixed that weak-spot under the battery tray that was abrading the wires.
