Just how slow should a 2000 TD5 auto be?

I'm used to driving fast cars (my other is an M140), but it seems the disco can be out accelerated by nearly everything else on the road... Very sluggish.

Mine has a full service history and has been well cared for over the years, although it has 165k miles on it.

It's had a full service, all new filters, oil etc. Cleaned out the intercooler (which was already pretty clean) and checked the EGR is closed properly, which it is.

No smoke, and it starts perfectly.

It's just incredibly slow, I can't ever see overtaking anything in it. Although it will happily go along at 70mph on the dual carriageway.
 
If you want to overtake you’ve bought the wrong car, you’ll find the 0-60 online somewhere, think the 300tdi I have is something like 17 seconds and that would have been new. If you can keep up with traffic then enjoy it’s other capabilities and forget the traffic light Grand Prix.

You will find those that have had it done would recommend having a visit from Mike at Dynachip, ( other stage 1 tuners are available).

Also, it is worthwhile seeing if you can find someone who has a diagnostic unit that can be plugged in whilst you take it for a drive and record the info, then review to make sure there is not something silly going on.

Mine is bog standard (1999, auto, 250000km on the clock), but at traffic lights I manage to get away first in 85 to 90% of the time ( not uphill). Rear mirror view: Mercs and Beemers getting agitated for losing against an old brick :D

After 35m the fun is over though...:(
Until winter time: seeing them struggle in their fancy fast cars turns on a smile on my face every time:cool:

But she copes well (speedwise) with any average, standard car out there. No problem with overtaking so far.
 
Add your approx location & maybe you can compare with someone else local with a td5. They're not performance vehicles, but shouldn't be as bad as you appear to be describing. Key is to get the ECU read for faults with a tester as said earlier in this thread.

I've been out this morning and on the way back thought I would time the 0-60 - with just me and half a tank of diesel it rocketed to 60 in 18.6 seconds.

I fully understand it's never going to be a quick vehicle, and that's not really the point - more than I was expecting a little more than it seems to have as it does struggle to keep up with traffic unless you drive it foot to the floor everywhere. Or maybe that's just what I need to do :D
 
Mine must be unusual as I never get left behind at lights etc, and keeps up with most other traffic up to 60 or so, although it's no Ferrari. As far as I know it's never been chipped.
It does seem to use a lot of diesel though - running average is around 23 mpg (over the 60,000 miles or so I've had it). But probable 1/3 of that is towing a caravan.
 
The td5 needs revs to progress well it’s quite a strange way to drive a diesel. In an auto this is obviously more difficult. Before I used to change gear at about 2500 and that meant the next gear was always below the turbo kicking in properly. Now if I want to accelerate hard i go all the way to nearly 4000 then once you’ve changed gear you’re always on peak power.

On the manual quick progress can’t be made until 3rd gear because the lower gears are too low but great for pulling power.

My other car is a 330d bmw and although you notice not being able to put your foot down and seeing ridiculous speeds in seconds, I wouldn’t say it’s super slow but it’s not quick. Powerwise it should be better than most small engined hatchbacks
 
I think it's fair to say that the acceleration figure for a bog standard Disco should be listed as 0 - 60 mph .... eventually.
The Disco 2 is after all a 13 years plus old 2 1/4 ton utility vehicle with all the aerodynamics of a concrete block.
As the others have said, a remap would probably be in order here.
 
Chek the MAF first, clean with IPA and see if any better.

GEt genuine whatever as aftermarket do not work properly
 
+1 for checking the MAF... mine improved with a new MAF. Its still not the fastest thing on the road (I regularly drive other vehicles and the D2 feels sluggish when i get back in it) but its still respectable pulling away from the traffic lights if you give it a bit of a kick!

if you want slow try driving a 1983 126hp range rover 3.5 with a 3spd auto!!
continental drift was faster lol 27.5 secs to 55mph :rolleyes:


The diesels respond well to remap's
however 18secs to 60 seems way too slow even for a TD5 thats more like a worn oot 200tdi lol

My TD5 feels quicker than a V8 D1
 
I find less is more with the right foot. If I floor it it revs it's nuts off and runs out of steam at around 3500rpm, if I back off the revs drop and away she goes, if mine is normal maybe a little more gentle on the gas will help.

Also wait till it's snowing and you have the right hand lane of the motorway to youself :D
