Hello all,


How much oil does an automatic geaxbox hold?, for a 1996 range rover p38 dse 2.5 diesel bmw engine model.

9.7 litres - and it's not oil, it's ATF. (Dexron llD )

Kenny, thank you but are sure there is 9.7 litres of ATF!!! thats .7 more than the engine oil?

Yes, I'm sure Bob - just think yourself lucky, the 4.6 V8 auto box takes 11 litres !

Figures are taken straight from the owners manual.............................

If you are changing the oil then refilling it won't take the full amount, as a lot of oil will remain in the 'box and torque convertor. When i did it I'd say it took about 6.5 litres, and getting the level back down after overfilling it is a right pain, but it is difficult to hit the right level when filling up as you have to check dipstick with the engine running and cold.

You are right Ian but the OP didn't make it clear if he is refilling or not - he only asked how much the gearbox held
