Hello
I have a 1995 300tdi disco. I got it through an mot 2 months ago. Just needed a bit of welding and 1 tyre. Not bad I thought I have replaced the ball joints springs shockers 2nd hand steering box (vast improvement) and a front bumper, BUT I have a strange whining noise ( even when the wife isn't in ) from I think the gearbox/ transfer box but not 100% but seem to notice more at @ 60, if I take my foot of the gas it seems to subside a little almost goes until I accelerate again. Is it worth buying another gearbox or transfer or is this a normal thing with 15 yr old discos. Plus i think the engine is nockin a bit but no black smoke any advice would be great or Is there anyone in the Bolton area who might be able to listen n give me an idea
Cheers
Neil

Just changed gearbox oil. Put ATF in last July when I bought it n changed to mtf95 3 weeks ago done the engine oil as well. Not changed the TB oil but checked n the level is correct. The noise isn't gettin any louder just annoying Coz I know it's there

i've a 1995 300tdi, and whines in 5th also. Sounds as you have described to be honest. To be fair it all depends on how much you want to spend on it. On mine i have fitted the following from 2009 to date:
clutch
engine
x3 sets of tyres(road tyres to muds to at's)
x2 front and rear sets of pads
x4 brake discs
track rod ends
anti roll bar bushes and drop links
trailing arms
rear arm bushes
£225 in welding(so far)
front wind screen
swivle cup
swivle seals
inner and outer hub seals
wheel bearings
full exhaust system
turbo
rear shocks
things left to replace:
x4 shocks and springs
gearbox
seats.
As you can see i have a list there and abit of money in it. I know i will never see that money back, but we love the car, and will spend more on it for the upcoming mot.
If you intend on keeping yours then spend the money, if you are looking to move on then don't

The reasoning behind this is I'm in 2 minds do I either lob a few grand on engine n gearbox n hope the chassis n body don't need much work in the next few years before i spend i get to the point of spending more than its worth or sell it n buy a newer td5

I would replace the trans box oil and then monitor the noise.

I've had several Disco's with whines, and they all just kept on going.

Depends on how bad the noise is of course.

hold on folks - this could be very likely to be a noisy diff.

i have known two discos where there is only a whine in 3rd 4th and 5th - it was the diffs and both times it went away when coasting.

before you start planning 600 quid payouts, take off the rear prop and stick it in diff lock and go for a drive.

if its still there then replace the rear prop and remove the front, and check again.

if the noise goes away with the prop off you know its that diff, and thats a 50 quid job.

bit if labour but worth checking :)

remember to come out of diff lock when you fit both props again!

thanks Mr Noisy
i will have a go at that next week , being an idiot newbie my next post will be " how do i put my rear prop on"
joke
i hope
