I am a new land rover owner -- 1998 Defender 90 Tdi -- and new to this forum. I am actually in South Africa with the 90, although the experience of this forum is obviously transferable.

Could anyone advise or comment on how long one of these vehicles will last, if properly cared for?

The vehicle has 257,000KM and is a 1998. That is a lot of miles. But the purchase price was reasonable (less than £7000) and the car has come back from road worthyness testing without any serious problems.

A full service history is not available, but the two previous owners are known and have invested a good deal in upgrades which would probably indicate that they maintained it properly.

257,000 KM is a lot of mileage. How long will it last if cared for? I realise that the engine could also give at some point, but even with that, the cost of a new engine would be a price worth paying to keep it on the road.

So, experienced land rover owners and aficianados, how long would one expect one of these vehicles to continue for?

Regards from South Africa

You're missing the point of Land Rovers. As a piece of machinery, if looked after properly it will last a long time. But the reason why it's reckoned that three quarters of all Landys ever made are still running is because, when it does go wrong, it can be repaired reasonably easily and cheaply.

And 257,000km isn't alot of mileage, its a lot of kilometres ;) but all parts can be replaced relatively cheap and easily ,as gas been said :)

257,000km? Your engines just broken in. Plenty life left in that auld boy.

More to the point get some pictures of it up see we can see it!

As the others have said the engine isn't really considered "broken in" until it reaches about 242,000km. Regular oil changes and maintenance will keep it sweet for a lot more kilometers.

get involved by posting on the site and it'll offer up some good advice (and light hearted abuse) for any problems you encounter.

I've just bought a fairly high mileage 110 at a good price, hopefully if something goes wrong I'm still quids in :)

Hey! That is all good news! Bottom line seems to be, take care of her and she'll give you plenty of rewards long into the future.

Will post pics shortly...

Am about to take it on a lengthy expedition to Niassa Province -- and the Niassa Reserve -- in northern Mozambique into end January. It will be a nice introduction to overlanding it in a Land Rover...
