Brim the tank & record the miles at the next brim well short of running dry (say 100 miles) calculate the average, multiply by the stated tank capacity & reduce that by 20% for any variation in consumption.
Back on the 'sixties I used this method when I ran three Austin Sheerlines (around 12-14mpg) with defunct gauges, but it was always mates with little economical cars that were the ones' that ran out of fuel
Capacity isn't the same as usable capacity, usually. Unless some person at LR actually had the sense to measure it that way. So a stated 20 gallon tank doing say 20 to the gallon to leave a massive margin for error and rough driving? And being loaded.

Has the warning light bust as well or don't they have those on 110s? Or does the feckin thing work off the same circuit?
But I'd do three hundred and then fill back to the brim, then do the maffs as others has suggested. Don't let the feckin thing run out just cos you has got a can full. Restarting after sucking up all the cr@p at the bottom of the tank, having to prime etc etc, no thanks! and stopping relatively suddenly when going like feck don't do the turbo no good neither.

Always carried a 5 litre can of spare fuel, just tipped the contents as over a year old in the car, and refilled the can again to keep it fresh.
Why not empty it into the car? Just don't leave it so long. That's what i do

My series fuel guage is about as useful as a chocolate fire guard so I refill when I reckon its about half empty.

Sorry by tipped I meant tipped into the cars fuel tank, as usual my crap descriptions failing me!
I would shed a tear if I had to throw fuel away, even skanky dirty old stuff would end up in my tdi.
My s2 is pretty accurate, and as a brucey bonus it has a low fuel light, something my 25 yr newer defender does not!
take off the filler cap, rock it and listen down the 'ole!
