Last Sunday, after some screeching on the motorway, the car lost drive - it worked for a while but finally gave up the ghost and refused to do anything in any gear.

So it was time to call the RAC. The RAC man could find no solution so called out a relay truck.
The relay man got it to engage hi box and that allowed drive - but we chose the relay home.
He suggested that it had possibly lost all its oil and overheated causing it to somehow refuse to engage either hi or low. He went on to suggest that during the time it had taken for him to get to the car it had cooled down enough to allow it to engage.
Later still I could engage low box - perhaps it had really cooled down.

Either way, at least she seems driveable....

So today I finally got around to looking at the suspected transfer box.

Under the car, there was a lot more oil than the last time I was there but not that much to be outstanding but when I took the drain plug out (after taking out the filler plug) I got, wait for it, about half a cup of very dark oil:eek:

The drain plug magnet had about half a teaspoon of oily iron filings attached to it:eek:

What should I do next?

I was thinking buy some more oil, swill it through, check there are no bigger bits of metal then refill it and hope for the best.

Along with hope I was thinking of jet washing the underside and keeping an eye out for leaks.

Am I deluding myself?

just do what you said, then give it a try??

That sounds about the same as the last 4 discovery boxes iv done, its normally the same in both the transfer and gearbox. I wouldn't worry too much about flushing it. The whole point of the magnet is to catch the metal so you will prob find the bulk of it is stuck to it.

Best thing you could do after filling it is degrease it all and give it a good wash then keep checking it so you can Find where the oil is coming from as there must be a leak. Then you can fix the leak and swap the oil then.

Cheers mark

Thanks - this all sounds quite positive - I was hoping for that :)

Any suggestions as to how I degrease it?

I was thinking of taking my ramps to a local jetwash.....

Perhaps there is something I should spray on before I go there?

Just any degreaser. You can get done tins of foaming degreaser now which seems quite good. Basically just spray it over everything. Agitate what you can with a brush. Then rinse off.

Dunno if it's cheaper but the £shop versions of Mr Muscle kitchen cleaner work really well at degreasing the engine ...

BUT please wear eye protection and gloves, long sleeves etc this stuff normally is Caustic soda which is effective for it's purpose but not nice stuff!!!!! Beware of the fumes as well.......

Kitchen cleaner - NOT oven cleaner

If you want to flush the transfer box out, fill it with ATF and run it for 100 miles or so, then change back to EP90.
Mine ran on ATF for 5000 miles by error and is fine, but was just assured it will now be very clean inside. :D
