sixty

Afternoon everyone, great forum you have here :)

I've just bought a 2005 TD4 and on a flat motorway with my foot floored on the revs its a long long build up to 70mph.

How long does your TD4 take to do this?

Based on the 13.2 seconds 0-60, i'd expect a couple of seconds

Heres a video...

Alot quicker than that and mine does 0 to 60 in under 10 secs

I immediately thought of you rhodie when I saw this thread - I'll be getting the stop-watch out tomorrow just for a check.

It'll be great if we get a lot of members chipping in with their results.

Yes more people the better.

I got bored and gave up watching! It clearly shows why it's always a 1.8 that goes past on the motorway:D

As promised here are the figures I got today.

Zero to 60mph with Synergy2a set to number 8 (high torque, med power) was 9.8 seconds - not bad for an auto.

With Synergy off - 13.4 seconds. :(

60 to 70 in 5th gear 5.2 seconds with Synergy.
60 to 70 in 4th gear 3.4 seconds with Synergy.

Wonder what a certain Mr J Clarkson would make of this, probably ask me to do it again with the Synergy set at 10 max.

I'm happy anyway - whether folks think it's fast or not - I don't care. :D

Ok I am sensing a little bit of irony in the above comments regarding this thread :scratching_chin:but I have bitten and with my bog standard, not an engine mod fitted, 54 reg TD4 with 113k on the clock...60-70 in 5th......5.4 secs as measured by Mrs DD with her iphone on a flat M25 earlier today. Not sure if that should be seen as acceptable, but seemed ok to me :confused2:

Thanks guys, fantastic help! So it seems 3-5 seconds is the average

The garage had replaced the Fuel pump, fuel filter, and x3 injectors and given it the all clear.

The problem is intermittent as some times it gets to speed no problem.

Here are two more videos I uploaded, 4th gear with no power, and the engine warning light with the (!) when all power was lost, this is after the repairs above.

turbo:
.. since the TD4 has a variable geometry turbo, there is more to go wrong. Often the symptom shows up engine warning light illumination and a loss of power at a steady speed (50mph+), whereas no problems occur in town. This is due to the variable geometry mechanism not working properly.
Check the thin tubes from the brake servo line to the solenoid and thence to the actuator capsule. Also check the actuator and make sure the mechanism on the turbo has not seized up. (with the engine idling, connect the solenoid directly to the battery - the actuator and mechanism should move.)

fuel rail pressure sensor:
This can produce a wide range of performance related symptoms if faulty. If dead, or if it has become disconnected, the engine may start but there will be little power - max speed will be 70ish and you’ll be down to 30mph or less on hills. See previous section for the known TD4 water ingress problem.
~~
be a good idea to clean the electrical contacts ( injector wiring harness ) .. and smear some ' contralube ' on them ..
same applies to all the other engine sensor connectors ..
the fuel rail pressure sensor seems particularly prone to corrosion on the contacts ..
and like some of the others .. only uses a 5 volt supply ..

'contralube' is a dielectrical grease .. and will prevent the corrosion occuring

(edited to add ) IF the turbo vanes are stuck .. it can result in 'overboost' .. in which case the ecu limits the fuel supply
to prevent potential catastrophic failure ..
and btw: going by the engine sound in the videos .. it's like the fuel supply has been limited ..
as if it's not even 'trying' ..

maybe check the condition of the turbo-vent filter .. if it's clogged up .. it could cause the vanes to
stick .. .. try taking the filter off 'n see if that helps ( but remember to replace it !! ) ..
some garages are known ignore / forget about that small filter on a 'service'

'n to prevent fuel tank sediment getting sucked into the filter ..
keep the fuel tank more than half full if possible
( the fuel guage on freelander 1's is known to misread ..
( mine is half full when the guage shows three-quaters full

at my age 64 i dont ever get to sixty in my freelander nor my mx5, 50mph and i think i am flying, no need to rush, if i ever get a speeding ticket it will be like a gold medal.i like to pose in them lol

Wow, I keep the official speeds as well but 50mph is slow I guess, I do 50 km per hour where it says 50, and respectively 70, 90 or 120 kmph where it is allowed. But then I'm still a youngster.....:D:D:D

Freelander Sport TD4 .... not measured it precisely but well under 10 seconds 0-60 (egr bypass is wonderful). 60-70 gotta be 2 secs or less. Not boasting, just the facts! :)
