The head bolts were only just nipped up on the bank on drivers side no wonder it over heated good news is that the liners are firmly in place and hopefully new gaskets and she will be good as gold. Will keep everybody informed as I go still cant believe the tensions on those head bolds one side approcx 65 ft lbs the other guestimate at 20 anyone seen gaskets like these before??

Did you take the pics on a toaster?

Seriously though, I have seen gaskets like that before and the engine had a major issue with the coolant.

This is a 30 k miles since replaced new engine from landrover still here we go rebuild and it will be fine

Mine were similar to that when i removed my 3.9 from my classic. You could see on the block that every cylinder in every direction was blowing and the gaskets were all broken up like yours. The gaskets were approx 80k miles old and they were purchased from Martin Motors.

When I built my 4.6, i re-tightened the head bolts a few times over a few days to ensure they were torque'd up correctly, it's surprising how they settle being stretch bolts.
