I need to remove the main input shaft on the gearbox? Im guessing its right up there with doing a full gearbox rebuild?

any tips for the easiest way to remove it and refit it?

That's the easy shaft
Remove gearbox
Undo bell housing to gearbox casing bolts
Sepererate the two parts with a little jiggle
The input shaft stays with the bell housing
So just strip that half down
When you put it back just make sure everything is well in place on the other shafts
