Hi Folks,

Struggling to get a manual showing how to remove the standard radio from my FL 1 (05) Facelift Freelander.

Don't want to wreck the dash (or radio for when it eventually has to go back in) but I need to get the radio out to connect a Parrot hands free and a different radio.

I understand the original unit is 2 din deep so I have sourced an adapter plate to allow single din fitting and a lead to convert to iso but don't want to order until I have confirmed it is all the correct kit that I need...

Any help please chaps....

If it's a standard Philips, sorry it says LR on it:cool:, with the 4 small holes on each of the corners I was able to remove it by pushing in two small screwdrivers fitting in the holes on one side and pull out that side of the radio whereafter the other side came out as well after pushing in the screwdrivers that opposite side. with the screwdriver you push aside a kind of plate having hooks on one side which take grip at the side of the opening in the dash, you can see it as an harpoon with the hooks pointing towards the outside at each hole, by pushing in that small screwdriver (or any other kind of wire of that caliber) you push that plate away which liberates the hooks of the "harpoon". I hope you see what I mean as it's difficult to explain but once you managed to get it out it all shows clearly wjat I mean.
 
Its quite easy to do, but I am trying to remember the procedure from memory. The black horizontal top panel above the radio just pulls off I think to reveal the top mounting screws, then pull off the heater knobs to reveal the panel securing screws behind, removing the heater panel gives access to the radio lower mounting screws. Hopefully someone else can confirm as its 3 years since I did mine :)

It is the one with a panel at the top and no visible holes for removal tools of any sort..

just the 2 screws underneath the cover, 1 screw either side on both the drivers and passengers footwell, then underneath the arm rest loosen the two screws and remove 2 more screws underneath the cover plate under the handbrake.

the whole centre console then slides out in one piece, no need to remove the control knobs etc..

once moved forward just unplug control cables and you will then have enough room to fit your new stereo. - no need to remove the centre console completly.

after doing mine a couple of times when changing stereos, it takes me 10 mins to remove and refit a new stereo. :D

(remove the black plastic cover just under the air vents to explose 2 screws)

then after removing the other screws mentioned in my previous post the centre console will then move forward enough for you to fit your new cables - (you can disconnect the couple of wires to give you some more movement)

Thanks again to everyone who has popped a reply in for me. Looks straight forward, just want to pop it out confirm connections, know what it should be but why tempt fate.. Then I will order adapter plate and converter to ISO cables for my head unit and Parrot hands free..

the landrover connector is the BMW shape and it looks like this:

(saves you taking out the stereo lol )

you will also want an adapter so that you can still use your steering controls with the new stereo (thats if the new stereo does support steering controls)

I put a double din sat nav into mine and tried several surrounds, non of them fit properly, ended up having to modify one of them by redrilling the holes and sanding the edges to fit properly...... Then again everything Ive done with this car upto now has started easy and then become complicated :( or is it just me and the car I have :(

ctr24lr03 is the surround you need!!!

oh, and theres a 'how to' on removing the head unit at the top of the freelander page!!!!!!!
 
i've just purchased a freelander td4, & need to know if i can change the radio/cd multi-changer to a normal radio/cd & can you get blanking fascias without any problem, thanks.

Will that be the fascia I need for my 53 reg? Its 2003 registered but has the facelift front and double din stereo but no steering controls. I'd like to get my old ipod compatible stereo put in :)
tho I may just find a suitable double din stereo.

How do I know if I have the Harmon Kardon speakers? As I have seen a few stereos that say they aren't compatible with HK. :confused:

You have the bog standard single CD head unit.
If you had HK speakers, you'll have an amplifier under the passenger seat, a subwoofer in the boot cubby lid and the front door tweeters have "Harmon Kardon" badges on them.
I doubt you have the HK upgrade though;)
 
I really like the look of that double din head unit. :) I recently installed a Kenwood single din head unit in my Hippo but I'm not too
happy with the way it pairs to my i-phone. It doesn't always connect automatically and sometimes involves powering down both the head unit and the phone.
The Becker radio in my work Sprinter pairs seamlessly and the Blaupunkt in my MG is almost as good. I'll have to do my research and find a double-din that
has good reviews. I don't often need sat-nav but it nice to have one when you do need it.

This is what I purchased to fit mine, they also sell a cheaper kit without the control box for the steering wheel controls.

Long shot as this is very old post but I followed these steps and struggling for room to pull the radio out, the centre console won't come forward enough as the arm rest and handbrake cover is in the way
 
Not 100% sure but I think you need to remove the 4 screws under the cubby box (arm rest) and 1 on the centre console the whole unit pulls back then I think

A fellow west yorkshiremen!

I did get the arm rest/handbrake cover back a bit by taking those screws out but it still isn't enough room with the seats all the way back :( the armrest/handbrake cover only goes back so far because of the handbrake and its sliding cover being attached
