Hi how do you change oil in rear diff ..... can you remove one of the bolts....to drain.......and conversley remove a bolt at top to refill???? Any advice????
To change the oil you will either need to remove the whole plate and then buy some of the sealant ( i don't know what its called) to reseal the whole plate on refitting. Else you can undo the filler/level plug (about half way up on the back plate) and suck out the old oil and then refill with new.
I did this on my previous FL and I had the devil's own job sealing it up again.
It's almost impossible to get the surfaces 'clean, dry and oil free'.
Your talking about vertical surfaces here and there no way I could get the diff body clean enough, without some method I didn't want to try. So I landed up with a little seep of oil from the bottom of the new joint.
Better to suck out a bit and then just top-up. I got a bit more than 0.5 litre out using a syringe type bit of kit on my current FL I reckon that's much easier.
I agree - not the best design - I'd prefer having a drain plug too.
Get yourself an oil suction gun and suck it out through the filler/level hole. The same item is also easier to use when filling up than an oil bottle.
I have a Silverline one, cheap but amazingly good and as the ends unscrew you can bulk fill it instead of sucking up the fluid. Just fit a longer hose (available from any DIY shop) if the 300mm on supplied is too short.
or you could undo the prop shaft bolt, it will come flooding out of there, I had to remove this bolt to fit the new seal.....But the suction gun aproach is probably the easiest
