I want to get a defender 90 or series 3 as my first car, but if they are classed as having the body type of a 3 door estate the insurance is ridiculous, around £10,000. However if it is classed as a 4x4 utility vehicle then that brings it down to just over/just under a grand depending on whether its a defender or series 3.
So yeah, is there any way to tell before buying it, so just looking at it, that it is or isn't a 4x4 utility body type
Also, I'm 17 which is why the price is so ridiculous

All my landys have been 4x4 utility on the insurance.

When I put in the registration it finds the landy automatically but says it's a 3 door estate, but I can say that the information is wrong and put it down as 4x4 utility van. I just wanted to check it wouldn't invalidate the insurance or anything, because I did read in another forum that it's supposed to be 4x4 utility van, so thanks for the help :)

Depends on whether it's a van type rear body or a CSW with windows?? if it's got windows and seats it's a car. if it hasn't it's a utility.

I want seats in it, for ferrying mates about and camping etc, so would no rear windows, but seats still keep it technically as a van?

What ya gonna tell your insurers, when they ask how many seats, it's got?? "7 seats but it's a van honest"

Something like that :D
What if I just bolt the seats in when I need em? Reckon that'd pass with the insurers ?

It'd be called driving with no insurance. think ya mates might be a bit upset when ya crash it, and kill em all. Un they can't sue ya cos ya got no insurance

It's just what was on the insurance forms

What does that have to do with what the word 'estate' means? Do you actually understand what an estate is?

If you don't know what an estate is how can you avoid buying one?
Do they make a 3 door estate?
how many seats does a 3 door estate have?
how many seats does your licence allow you to drive?
Have you ever seen a unicorn?
How do you know you haven't seen a unicorn?

I Understand estate in terms of cars, but when its on the insurance forms for a defender, it throws me a bit as one is classed as estate and is a car, yet another is classed as a 4x4 utility van but looks the same
Licence is standard up to 8 seats licence
