hi, im looking for a bit of advise, got my 90 a few months back, and set about under-sealing it, now looking at it i dont seem to have done a very good job, so what i want to do is take it all off treat with red oxide and then use black hammerite, but whats the best way of getting under-seal off

Warm it up carefully and use a strong scraper or bolster chisel.

I had the same idea, get all the bodged job paint off. Horrible job. Did some then just dinitrolled it. It's hard to get everywhere unless you have a bare chassis.

no, its not a bare chassis and Ive got to do it on the drive, garage isn't big enough, id better get to work

White spirit - but it will make a hell of a mess.

well if it's a bare chassis you don't have to go as careful with the heat, use a wire brush attachment too

i had the same idea about painting the chassis, but found it was completely impossible. eventually just used a combo of waxoyl, underseal waxoyl and clear waxoyl to do it instead. much easier, and forgiving. also easy to touch up.

yer but waxoil can still trap moisture and rot your chassis.

I used a couple of wire wheels on a drill and angle grinder along with a chisel, paint scraper. It was still original underseal on my 1996 D90 so not too bad.

but it took a lot longer to do than I expected. I took 2 weeks off work and it nearly took me all of that to do it. (I did do all the bushes and paint everything else along the way though). So I basically spent 5 days cleaning it, degrease it and then spray some prep stuff on. Then I set to work with POR15 which I have found to be really good. Realyl easy to apply and dries in 3 hours. did 2 coats on the full chassis and all outriggers etc. Topped exposed parts with normal chassis black paint as POR15 discolours/breaks down with UV light.

POR15 sticks best to partially rusty metalwork so it suits land rovers a treat. doesn't need to be 'keyed' etc. Its also flexible so wont chip/flake like some people have reported hammerite to do.

Fully recommended. marine degreaser/prep stuff/1L of POR15 cost me about £50 delivered. still got some left to.
