Over the last 12 months my '94 Discovery has had quite alot of work done to get it back to roadworthy standard (see previous posts!).

Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut I'm getting a little nervous that the only remaining major part that is left to go wrong is the gearbox.

My question to the Forum is how do I check the gearbox to ensure oil levels are fine and it is in generally good condition?

would it not pay ya to just change the oil instead of just checkin it. seems pointless to worry about it then not change it.








(unless you already have then i'll just shut up and make the tea)

Hi Kev, if I were you I would change the oil in the gearbox and if you haven't already done it, in the transfer box and the axles as well.

It's an easy job to do, you'll need 3 litrs of MTF94 (Difflock EVO1) or equiv and about 6ltrs of EP 80-90 (Difflock EVO2), PLUS a pump-type device to get the new oil in.

I used one of these (see pic) that I got from a local DIY place - cost 1.50 euros. Put the solid end in the new oil container and the flexy end in the refill hole.

Looks like a handy device, not seen one of them before. You can do it without though either by buying the oil in a container that has a built-in extending neck or you can thread a hose pipe through the engine bay into the filler hole and gravity feed it in. You'll probably spill some though.
