I am just about to do the same thing and replace the bulb with a cree LEDPrise the plastic surround out of the dashboard, undo two screws holding in the clock, the bulb is in a holder in the middle at the back. Turn the holder 90 degrees and pull it out. It can be a bit tight.
A CREE in the clock . How bright do you need the clock.cree LED
Well when the sun is out I really can't read the clock so as I drive with sidelights on I am hoping that a decent LED will make it more visible, I suppose I could wear a wrist watch
Point taken Nodge, I have just ordered a wrist watch with a big dial and leave well alone. At least it is one job off of my list. It's an LCD clock. It doesn't even need the back light when it's day light. The back light is there simply make it more visible when light levels are low. You'll fine that having a very bright back light could well bleed out the numbers completely. Also having a bright clock at night will be very distracting. Manufacturers spend huge amounts of research time and money on these things. I personally leave things like that well alone, in the knowledge that the manufacturer has already done the best that is possible.
I don't think you'll loose anything by leaving alone.I have just ordered a wrist watch with a big dial and leave well alone.

I actually don't use my clock as my sat nav is in front of it. I take the time off that, or the stereo depending on which one I look at.
