It's an LCD clock. It doesn't even need the back light when it's day light. The back light is there simply make it more visible when light levels are low. You'll fine that having a very bright back light could well bleed out the numbers completely. Also having a bright clock at night will be very distracting. Manufacturers spend huge amounts of research time and money on these things. I personally leave things like that well alone, in the knowledge that the manufacturer has already done the best that is possible.

I don't think you'll loose anything by leaving alone.
I actually don't use my clock as my sat nav is in front of it. I take the time off that, or the stereo depending on which one I look at.

You are right, I only use sat nav on a long run so I should either get a telephone holder on the dashboard or go for longer runs.
