Just checked my diff oil levels, its black and slightly metallic despite being changed 6000miles ago! :( turns out the guy who's been servicing it has put the wrong oil in I think, also the wrong power steering fluid, and probably engine oil (not even got to the gearbox or transfer box yet!)

It's only done 26000 miles from new, am I in for lots of nasty surprises in the ner future!?

Thanks,
Charlie.

Change them all and hope for the best, depends how far off he is. Bit at the end of the day some oil is better than none

Thanks,
They're all getting changed today. Any way to check for damage or literally just hope for the best? I'm tempted to sell it! Guy I bought it from has been a nightmare.

Charlie.

I'm so confused...

Thought invoice said MTF in diffs!
But we have:
MTF in main gearbox £14
EP90 in Axles and transfer box £21

Seems VERY cheap oil for a drain and recharge!? (And 7liters engine oil for £26, god knows what he's been putting in, or if its even been changed :/)

And I'm slightly confused how EP90 could go black and metallic in both diffs in 6000miles!

Not going to be a fun afternoon, I'm worried about my poor landie :(

Hi Charlie,

EP 90 is black!

What tear and model is it, as the recommended oils could be different?

ATF goes in your powers steering, which one again depends on year and model!

I've filled and drained my diff twice now since fitting a new diff at the weekend. Both times the oil came out absolutely filthy, and that was after topping up with new, clean oil. So I wouldn't worry too much about the colour. Unless its causing problems that is

Hi, oooops! Landrover dealer said it should be kind of golden!?

2009 2.4tdci 110, 3500kg HD model.

Thanks.

Just saw that. EP90 is golden, black once its been used a few times possibly but its golden when new. I'll even take a pic at lunchtime if you want

That's very kind of you, but this afternoon old stuff is coming out and fresh stuff going in, all been ordered by my new mechanic who's very fussy, I'm sure he's got the right stuff this time! New mechanic was very alarmed by colour of diff oil black/metallic after 6000miles. Well see, I'm on iPad but ill try and upload one piccies of what I find :)

Just got in, that was a long afternoon!

New power steering fluid( had wrong stuff)
New coolant(a bit of brown stuff but not too bad, was a weak mx before though)
New oil in front diff (was horrendous, black with a green tint, metallic, with some bigger chunks of swarf. Unsure if it had good oil or not before)
New oil rear diff ( no where near as bad as front diff but much the same, black but with less metal floating about)
Transfer box(think it had wrong oil, very dark brown, seemed alot of thicker stuff at bottom of drain tray)
Gearbox (oil was very watery compared to what we put in, again dark looked well used)

Engine oil/filter were done the other day along with brake fluid, tighten up nuts and bolts.

Next week comes, spheres, diesel filter, air filter, sort the play in the steering(maybe) and sort the handbrake light and hang the drivers door so it shuts properly..

All that at 28000miles. Moral of the story? Don't trust people! That or landrovers need full service including gearbox oil every 6000miles...

front diff oil would have "one shot" swivel grease contamination might be worth putting some back in them

Got a couple of the packets of grease to do that next week, would explain the nasty colour, but not the metal? Unless the swivels are breaking up due to lack of grease?

Also forgot, magnetic bung from transfer box was covered in metal, like the one from the gearbox in that video.

It was the only magnetic one, should I put magnetic bungs in the diffs help get the metal out in future?

The prices you've said seem fine to me, a gallon of good oil for the engine can be got as cheap as £12.

It sounds like ep90 in your front and rear Diffs. It's very thick and a dark green colour to begin with. Iv changed diff oil after a few hundred miles in mine and its already black with metallic flakes.

It sounds like your transfer box has ep80/90 in it if its brown. Again a fine oil to use. You can use 80/90 in both your Diffs and transfer box.

Your gearbox should have either mtf or ATF in it. If its ATF it will be red and stink!

The biggest problem iv found is everybody lists different oils because over the years they have changed what is to be used. The first time I bought it all for mine I was told to put ep90 in the Diffs and transfer of and ATF in gearbox. I then read up that mtf is better for gearbox but the only place I could find it was land rover and a specialist told me for what I'm using it for(only off roading) it wasnt worth it so stick to ATF.

When I went elsewhere they've said to use 80/90 in Diffs and transfer. There is just too many variations. I think the important thing is you have something in there to lubricate it all. It's if you have nothing or are draining out water when you need to worry.

Cheers mark

Regular changes are the very best thing ...

Been every 6k miles so far, would expect the oil to look pretty clean after such a short time.

Mark- thanks. this is a Tdci, I think they've changed what oil can be used? Ie 5/30 fully synthetic in the engine, seemed cheap to me... Tried to order engine oil from landrover, they wanted £140 plus Vat! Lol
I was told ep90 would be golden/clear? Was told you can't se 'EP' anything in the transfer box.

James-thanks. Might try and put magnetic bungs on the diffs next change.

Goon- not particually smelly, but its never even been driven through a deep puddle lol.

I'm so lost about what it should have, what it had in it and what it's got now! If I knew I'd be lying underneath it covered in oil sorting out someone else's mistakes I would have got an older cheaper landy and saved some money!

Thanks for all the help.

EDIT. Rear diff starting to leak so have to do that too now.
