The plate above where a middle seat would go in the cab area gets extremely hot while driving! Is this normal? If not then why is it getting so hot?
Thanks
Gearbox needs oil
Its got an engine and transmission under it. They get hot in operation.
I'll checkGearbox needs oil
Ha that's exactly what I was thinking, will be nice in the winter! The Foden ones got like that, better than a heater
As in nearly too hot to touch!
It's the plate above the transfer box, it's a defender 90

Yes not a bad shout that, I may give that a go if it keeps happening. It's leaking oil from under there somewhere so it's in the garage on Monday, hopefully they'll sort it.Then no ... that shouldn't get hot unless something is wrong somewhere. Mine has never got to more than ambient cab temperature.
I'd guess that maybe the exhaust has been re-routed, maybe the gearbox/transfer box is running hot, maybe no oil! It might also be pointing to a problem within the boxes, nackered bearings maybe ...
Have you felt how warm/hot the gear and transfer boxes are getting when the plate is hot? Take the plate off and drive around with someone in the passenger seat and see what's happening ...
I know, I ignored it the first time you said itEngines get hot when running. There might be a clue in the name. Internal combustion engine.
Thank you turboman for your sensible answer this timeRight. Not sure why you posted about in 101 and military, then?
That area shouldnt get so hot, but the transmission does get warm in prolonged operation.
Try what Paul suggests. ^^^^^^^^^^^^. But if the box is really dry or very worn, noise may identify the issue anyway.
Infra red thermometers, which you can point at the engine or trans, are only a few quid these days. They give a pretty accurate temperature reading of specific areas, which can be compared with manufacturers data. We us them to diagnose cooling issues on boats.

I posted in this section because it's a Defender 90 ex MOD without all th civilian upgrades etc ( Maybe I should have stipulated that at first), unless that still leaves me in the wrong section?
