My project car was a bugger to start when hot, it used to be turn the key and pray.
With the modulation correct, it now starts well cold or hot.
The engine feels smoother and surprisingly it's using less fuel.
So I can say with confidence that fixing the FIP timing is a better fix than the Hot Start fix bodge.

Thats my next thing to do give the pump a tap towards the engine whilst using the rovacom light, hopefully i can get it spot on.

Does make huge difference. My 95 will not start properly when warm without the hotstart relay even with static set.
You may remember I tried it in my thread before, removed the hotstart after doing timing, then had to put it back in.

Is this hot start to do with old chain stretch? As had it when had old chains but new chains starts straight away from hot.

Early diesels didn’t bring lift pump on until engine starts, LR resolved this with later models so they don’t need it. Fools edc into thinking it’s cold ; adding extra fuel for startup and brings glows on every turn even with hot engine.
Il find the thread - it started here, is how I found this place.

Found out what up to temp means then have we? :D

If you start to get issues and cannot afford a refurbed FIP then as an interim bodgit you can mark up where the FIP is (so you can move it back if necessary) and then rotate it a few degrees towards the engine. Might get you out of jail for a bit longer. Obviously better to do the job properly.

Done it.

Straight after I set FIP I cut the hotstart out thinking it wouldn’t be needed....wrong :D
Extra advancing might help. Static has made more of a difference to my engine than anything else. If it werent for you, Bagshot and wammers I never would have been able do it.

Hot start is helpful mainly on older high mile cars were the engine and injection system is past it's best. On later cars from 1999 the lift pump runs on cranking on early cars it only runs with glows and when engine is running. So getting static right helps later cars but does not always do it for early ones. If you look at the diagrams early cars can be modded to get lift pump on cranking for the price of a bit of wire a diode and a bit of soldering.

No I have no diagnostics only a dti. Was a gnats out, behaves much much better with it done.

Chain stretch was obvious and as I can’t replace my QS wammers idea was if I could set the static atleast if it does cut out again I will be able to restart it, this worked. FairPlay I took some convincing that I would be able to do it.

What diagrams, wiring in rave? That’s way beyond me

Fitting the extra diode looks quite simple in the RAVE diagrams, it's a bit harder identifying the right places on the fuse box. I'll add it to my to do list as I have an early fuse box on the shelf then I can send you a photo of the location.

Wouldn’t rush I’ve still not got a lift pump. Well there is one in there for decoration but it’s dead.
Have to check for voltage at the connector when I remember, pumps never worked in ten years I’ve known the vehicle.

Not surprising your FIP struggles when it gets hot then:rolleyes:

Not happened in long time. Once I think when we had heat wave
My worry is what if a lift pump supplies more fuel so FIP over heats quicker and consumption goes up
Runs okay currently.

The lift pump is supposed to supply a little more fuel than is needed.
