have the famous hot start problem on my 95 p38 dtse. Was speaking to a friend who salvages and repairs rangies, and he says it is the fuel temp sensor which is probably knackered.

It sits between cylinders 4 & 5, under the air inlet manifold. Am getting a new sensor today and will get it fitted at the weekend. Just wondering has any one else done this, and is it the cure for this problem, or will i have to invest in an after market repair kit??

It wont fix it,if the sensor fails it will just use a default setting, get one of the fix kits off E-Bay,these give a coolant temp low enough to run the glows, give more start quantity and advance .

As Eightinavee says - changing the sensor won't cure it - I have the same problem and have changed the engine temp sensor and the fuel temp sensor in the fuel pump - the only cure is to fit the hot start fix relay and resistor kit, unless of course you know how to reprogramme the ECU software that currently (thanks to BMW) tells the system that when the engine is warm it requires no extra fuel, no pre heat, and no timing adjustment, unlike just about every other ECU controlled Diesel I have come across in 24 years as an auto Engineer

eightinavee, youre dead right, fitted the sensor, made bugger all difference and in the process, i lost one of the 12mm bolts that secures the air manifold to the engine block. Thankfully it fell down into the depths of the engine bay, and not into one of the cylinders.

Will have to get an ebay kit now.:(
