Hi

My disco (2001, TD5) gets really hot against my left leg when driving for a while. Doesn't matter if the heating is off or on. Heat is the transmission housing. It's quite nice in winter but bloomin' horrible in summer, especially in shorts.:rolleyes:

The LR dealer I bought it from tells me that they all do this. He says that it's the heater pipe. He claims to have taken it apart and tried putting some heat reflective cover behind the panel. It's the same as ever.

My mates Disco is the same, his doesn't do it....

Any ideas please? I can't stand next summer with it....

Is it a manual box or an auto?

If auto, generally (I'm not certain to be specific about the Disco as mine is a manual) auto boxes are cooled by coolant that circulates to and from the cars radiator - could it be this you are feeling?

I have noticed the tunnel being hot on mine but only when the heater is on as there are 2 ducts - 1 each side of the centre console (built into the console) that duct the heating air to the rear footwell.

Thanks for your reply. It's a manual gearbox.

It's hot all the time, particulary on a long run. Particularly noticable when the heater is off and you are trying to cool the car down.

Any more ideas, anyone?

Has anyone else noticed this with their Disco?

I guess it can only be either the gearbox overheating - worth checking the oil level, if this is very low, it could allow excess heat to be produced. Get under the car (with the car on a level surface) and unscrew the gearbox level plug on the side of the box, oil should trickle out, if it does not, top up.

There is a thick rubber matting under the carpet that surrounds the transmission tunnel, this will no doubt provide some insulation - has a previous owner or dealer removed or cut this away for some reason? - seems and odd thing to do but you never know.

For all that the heater is switched off, is it still allowing heat into the heater channels in the centre console? This would more likely if you have climate control (digital display rather than heater knobs) as the heater flaps are operated electronically. Test with engine hot and running, put on fan, turn temperature to low, with direction set to footwells and check you get cold air coming out the vents at the back of the console (directed towards the rear seats)
 
My 200 tdi transmission tunnel used to get "quite warm" but I didn't think much of it. Then the gearbox blew up!!

£1100 later and it's back on the road and the transmission tunnel doesn't get any where near as hot.

I don't want to be a bringer of doom but I'm keeping an even closer eye on running temps and lube levels from now on.

lube oil is not there just for lubrication, it also cools the internal heat generated. engine or gearbox.
 
Thanks a lot for your advice. The dealer that I bought if from told me that it is normal for a TD5... your replies indicate that it isn't. Hmmm, funny that !

I've had the under carpet matting checked

I'm not sure what you mean about the heater?? the air coming out of the vent, when directed at you feet is cold-ish, not on warm days though (wish I had bouth one with aircon).

I'll definately get the gearbox oil checked out!!!!!!.... I'm scared now...

I have a 2002 TD5 Disco, and you do get some hot air pull through from the heater (on or off) coming from the transmission tunnel area vents. It gets warm, but not hot (and certainly not uncomfortable even in summer in shorts)

Just out of curiosity, what transmission was it, and what was the cause in the end of it "blowing up"... wasn't the taliban or anything?
 
I have a 51 plate manual disco 2 so I will check mine next time I drive it - can't say I've noticed any heat though. One thing I have noticed is that if you've just used the car, and then you stop, get out, come back and drive it again, the cabin does feel warm, and warm air comes through the vents. I put this down to warmth from the engine coming through.

Hope you have managed to get to the bottom of it. Does yours make a funny farty hissing noise when idling? please see my post!

hear me out here but have you by chance got an electric fan or has it still got the factory viscous fan. if you have an electric fan fitted, the heat from the engine dissipates under the car causing the body shell to get warm, or even hot, whereas with the viscous and the cowling the heat is pushed out of the front grille. i kid you not ;)
