OK so I bought one....then I read the volumes of doom. :mad:

That said it looks and drives really well. The vehicle is in great condition with low miles - just over 20k.
It has no coolant loss, the oil is as you would expect in terms of quality and quantity - i.e. no emulsion or crap.

My problem is that the engine runs VERY hot in that when I open the bonnet the heat hits you like a fist. The bonnet stay is too hot to touch - apart from the rubber bit - but the metal is fooking boiling. The temp gauge is fine and as I say it drives fine, should I be worried? Should I do anything, or check anything other than my savings??:blabla: Aaggghhhh...any advice (other than why did you buy it) is very welcome...

The remote stat is fitted - this is an 05 plate and as far as I can tell was done as standard. Any advice on how / what / where to fit an EWP would be appreciated. I can do electrics and basic stuff no problem, but any pointers would be much appreciated, as I'm unsure what to do there.

Interesting and thanks! I won't be driving it the 150 miles tomorrow I was going to then.... Any ideas on how long to fit and any preferred stockists? Is there a belt change if I do not use the OEM mechanical pump? Sorry for the dumb questions....
 
One last question - what about the fan? In other cars I had if the motor was hot the fan stays on after switch off. Now OK, that's not the same as the EWP, but surely the EWP would be more efficient if the fan stayed on too, as at least the cicrulated water gets cooled? I'm thinking there must be a kit for this engine but so far can't find one...is there one? Thanks.
 
not sure about fan as yu would have to tap into the ECU, I dont think it would be difficult (via a relay) but aint sure how.
 
very true 1769. Mainly coz we dont know why it appears to be running hot. What it will do, though, is reduce the risk of cavitation, hotspots and HGF in the future

True but I'd say its running no hotter than any other 1.8, newbies always panic when the fans don't come on.....................they rarely do but it's a pretty failsafe circuit.

My only doubt is the stat fitted incorrectly, but temp gauge shows normal so I wouldn't worry
 
its impossible for us to determine that, 1353. :D

My suggestions will not make it run cooler, just help reduce the chance of it overheating.
It is, of course, possible to have the actual temperatures measured by means of an infra red thermometer, which would answer the OP's q as to whether it actually is overheating or not :D

Hi, the top is hot and the bottom cooler. I had heard about the V6 being hot but my 1.8 is and so far I have not seen similar stories...maybe I just did not search enough. For me though it does not feel right, I have owned some high performance motors in the past and flogged them and never seen (or felt) this heat before.

His 1.8 will only run cooler after switch off ;) with EWP. I only endorse them in V6's
