I have a 2002 Freelander TD4

The horn is completely dead. I have checked fuses - OK.

The dashboard lights for Traction Control and Hill Decent luminate randomly when driving. (This could happen daily or not at all for a few weeks!)

Any ideas if the two probs are related. Grateful for ideas.

Best regards

Stuart

The hill descent in my wifes 02 TD4 didnt light up on the dash and i removed the rubber gear lever boot and the Purple wire was snapped at the connection with the gear lever, a quick re-solder and it was all sorted.

I would also look underneath your steering coloum for any loose connections or frayed wires, check nothing is jammed in the steering wheel height adjustment mechanism. For the horn, H/D and T/C to all go on the blink suggets the faults are all linked and possibly a wiring fault.

Hi i would check that your brake light switch is working correctly, the brake lights come on ok but the switch may still have an intermitant fault, there is a relay for hdc and as some one has said broken wires on on gearknob/hdc operation, but i would go for brake light switch, check to see if lights come on when you brake next.
The horn is best to check at the horn itself, a freelander has a high and low note horns fitted and i doubt if both have gone wrong, really easy way to check horns is leave passenger door or bonnet open and lock car do you get miss lock sound for alarm,if so you have now narrowed it down to buttons on steering wheel and rotary coupling under steering wheel which is also the part that fires drivers air bag,try locking car first and then get back to me dont play with steering wheel yet, tiga

Thanks for the advice
So far, I have tried setting the alarm with the door open (as suggested) and the horn does operate (sounds like two tones to me but can't be certain).
I have tried the brake pedal and all three brake lights operate correctly.
I also looked at the Hill decent switch connection at the gear stick and that looks OK too.

So, horn still doesn't work from the steering wheel switches but I haven't had the TC and HD lights iluminate for no apparent reason simultaneously for well over a week now!

I guess the next stage is to check the wiring for the horn?
Thanks for your help
Cheers

Hi stuart i would suggest that the horn wiring is ok due to misslock sound and yes your right 2 horns, the next point of call is the steering wheel switches, you will have to take off your drivers air bag,you need to disconect battery first and leave 2o mins to power down, drivers air bag is removed by 2 torx screws under steering wheel i believe torx 40 you can lift off air bag without disconecting it to check steering switches you can just earth out the wire to switches to earth to get horns to work or do it properley with multimeter,if horn does not work earthing out it will be your rotary coupling which is the bit under the steering wheel which has srs written on it,hope this helps, tiga

Hi All

I have a similar problem in that my TC & Hill Decent lights come on of ther own accord aswel. Again for no apparent reason. It has been more regular the last few days while it has been hot. The user handbook says they will flash if too hot when required, but mine don't flash, they come on for approx 10secs solid & then go off. When they do come on I wouldnt expected them to be required as it is just normal driving conditions.
Any suggestions ?

The brake light switch can become faulty and causes the lights to iluminate on the dashboard, this happened on mine, even though the brake lights still worked.

I too have had the TC and HDC lights come on when I press the brake pedal. Normally the next time I press the brake pedal they go out again. From what I've read sounds like the brake pedal switch. Two questions:

1. Is the switch expensive (and does anybody know what LR call it or the part number)?
2. Is it a DIY job or will I need a garage to fit it?

Cheers

Does this sound the right part? XKB100080L Stop Lamp Switch. Comes in at £5.59 inc VAT.

I have a similar problem with the SRS light fault on a Freelander this month.8; LR Dealer Service looked at it -said it was the Spiral Circuit switch and the horn has stopped working as a result of their diagnostics/probing. The part is $400.00 plus. They refuse to fix their error with the horn. Any ideas??

I think they are talking Bollix.

:wtf: is a "Spiral Circuit switch" - i think its a case of "bull**** baffles brains".

its more likely to be the" Oozalum bird" relay........ :googleit:

Hi all.

I just bought a 2000 plate freelander - same two issues, no horn and DHD light on.

For the horn, I checked the fuse, replaces the rely. Still no fix. From this thread I checked the horn via the 'lock doors while one door open' and the two tone worked.

Next check is the switches, but as neither work, it seems unlikely? Next would be the airbag rotary contact unit- a pain to get to, and 250 to replace! So called the dealership for advice.

The guy suggested it was the horn, not the expensive unit (cheaper option for me!) but I checked the horn via the alarm. He suggested its two horns, one as an alarm, one as a horn.

Is this correct?! If so, where are they both as I can only find one!

Hi,i would leave stealers alone, they will tell you owt!,you will get better advice on here and it costs you nowt--all good people who know their Hippo,s.i had a problem with my brake switch--lights on dash coming on-took the switch off, cleaned and lubed and put back on-no further problems up to now.stealers put a TR End on mine and wanted £130 PLUS for doing it!!!.Good advice on here my friend---Dave

the brake light switch is easy to do get a torch and look up at the top of the brake pedle you will see it just twist it to the left or right 45% and it will pull out the simple way to put it back is put it in position and have the engin running so the brake pedle pushes down easy and the push and twist it back into position the wiring has the thumb press clip on it hope this helps if you get all three amigo lights on it could be a couple of things but no one ever mentions this one the gravity sensor it is under the centre consol between front seats if you have the one with the arm rest you can see it by taking the cd holder out just four screws I acidently pulled the wires out on mine while doing the handbrake cables

Had a problem with the vehicle horn myself.

I replaced the 'STEERING COLUMN ROTARY COUPLER' - they cost about £200 new - but I got mine off fleabay for £20.00! Very easy to do.

Have you changed the radio recently?

Does your vehicle have the volume switches on the steering wheel - if so, do they work?

Below is a current link so you know what you might need

I Haynes Manual will help too.
