Thanks for the CAT Info.

Just cause i'm thick, but if they write it off, they'll pay me out "x" amount, i can then buy it back and fix it hopefully within my "x" amount payoff. Do the checks and paperwork and all good?

Still fingers crossed they might repair it.

Why bother? Just buy another one with the payout. If you repair it, when you want to sell it people will HPI it, see its a write of and find another (i would). They wont go into details to see what happened , they will just see "write off" and walk away!

Cant see that they will repair it. The usually guide is if the repairs cost more than 60-70% value they will write it of. Proper, quality body work is expensive and it does not have a high "Glasses" value. Dont get it done cheap to avoid write of status. Pointless.

i wouldnt buy a cat c or d that had been repaired... however i would buy it to fix myself. only cos i would know its been done right..

always have the option of buying back from insurance company and selling as salvage.. may even make more money that way..you never know

Did the same on a bike (GSXR1000K2) that i wrote off after 2 days or owning (lady pulled out in front of me!!). Bought it back for £200 from ins co (cat B so could not go back on road) and sold it for £970 on Ebay for conversion to a track day bike!!:)

Cheers Data..

Fett, i dont think so, i drove to work, all ok, came out 8 hrs later and it was ****ing water........dont know how that was possible, done a few miles in it since the core plug was replaced.

Hi All,

Not very happy.....

Yesterday evening had a Black Taxi hit me near enough head on.....spun me abit into a solid rock wall raised flower bed...

My question is how much is my car worth? By the book (Insurance Value)

Its a X Reg 2000 P38 Diesel Auto done 99,000miles in Light Blue. Was in A1 Condition.

This was not my fault so should be all good, just worried they may write it off as the said the max claim is 60% of the vehicles value.

Hi,just a point. But if they 'write it off ' When i worked for an insurance company. There were one or two cars that they wrote off and the people had our company put them back(repaired) not paid out.It is you used to be YOUR choice. But yes you may have a job selling it on.

I guess the pressure just pushed on it all day and then when thing contrracted it went pop lol, think yourself lucky my heater matrix exploded yesterday, now the core plugs can be a bastid but not as much as a matrix

The damage is dents all down drivers side panels and front bumper. Also looks like some major damage to Axle as the rear wheels look like they have shifted 2inch across. 2 busted alloys and two ripped tyres, oh and an side impact airbag out the seat...!!

Deepest condolences, brace yourself for a write-off. What about the black rat, hopefully he came off worse. Did he admitt liability (unlikely) & any police action pending?

if it gets written off,i wouldnt walk away,i would buy it back, you can probably fix this for under £500 depending where you source the parts,at the end of the day you know how little damaged it has sustained ,buy it back ,fix it yourself and you will still be quids in at the end, even take some photos of damage to show any future buyers if you plan on selling it.i know what i would be doing, but your choice.

Fett - Good luck with that, I wouldn't know where to start!! They'll be loads of help here!!!

Thanks for the pictures idea, that's a plan.

Yea, the taxi did come off worse however he got himself a rental organised the nite, so will be back to work by now, police put it down to an accident.

It gets collected tomorrow, so hopefully they look at it before Xmas. Still waiting for a courtesy car, which they said will be like for like, I don't believe that thou!!

Anyone put a value on my car before the accident?

Depends on your IC, mate of mine was insured with a company I'd never heard of scourced through a 'comparison web site' & when his old RRC was crunched he had a nearly new Disco for several days as a courtesy car!

Probably a write off, cat c.
I've had 2 written off this year, 1 I didn't want back and the other I bought, both were offered at 10% of the payout although I have been told that some cars can be as much as 20% depending on what it is. Vic marker on the logbook, MOT remains current and valid.
Most Cat C cars are re-mot'd due to them being bought as repairable salvage with no paperwork.

Me? I'd buy it back, repair and spend the remaining cash on beer and prozzies.

i was told that you can insist the thierd party insurance repair fully if they have accepted liability. not sure how true that is but its worth a go!!!

look round for similar cars, make sure yours was in top condition when you had it, a little stretching of the truth doesnt hurt.

never accept the first offer and reject the second too.

i got £1975 for a car i paid £1250 for!! i then used the cash to buy my rangie so i won on most fronts.

also the t/party insurers will probably want you to accept partial blame, dont. they will provide case law etc to support thier case. i looked to the highway code, when mine got wrote off i was turning right and a car overtook me and implanted itself in the drivers side. they wanted me to take 30% blame so i quoted section 167 of the highway code, "167

DO NOT overtake where you might come into conflict with other road users. For example

* approaching or at a road junction on either side of the road etc etc

within a week they had accepted liability.

also make sure you claim from thier insurance and not yours if you have fully comp!!! plus you need a hire car of the same quality and of the same type, i.e 4x4 dont be lumbered with an eco box!!!

you should get a newish disco or something similar, tell them you have a horse box you need to pull and a 1.2 astra just aint gonna do it!!!

hope your feeling better, after all its a car and it seem no one was injured, you do have serios whiplash tho!!! thats an extra 2k to claim!!!

just a random fact was on some new tread on my iphone ages ago. the best thing to claim for is loss of sex drive. they cant prove it and it has knock on affects and the pay outs are way higher.

To add to Gav's good advice, if the other party has accepted liability and you want the car repaired, you can go through the small claims court for up to £5K without involving the ionsurance at all.

Cheers Gav / Data,

Feeling better now, just about finished cough up blood....

Ended up get a 10 plate ML for a courtesy car, not bad, loads of toys but not a rangey!!

They have now written it off, classing it as uneconomical to repair as it was estimated as being a £8337 repair.....even thou I value the car at around £7995. (probably well high, but have seen older reg, more miles and manual) for this price.

Thing is now, do I buy back to repair and drive? they want me to show invoices get a car check, new mot and more.

This would mean that I have to replace the airbag in the passenger seat.....is this possible?? I think the rest of the car is repairable for around £2000ish, this would mean that I could by it back & repair it without it costing me and just take the hit of it being a CAT C or D at a later date.

Would my insurance premuim then cost me more because of the previous write off status?

Thanks as always guys...

Airbag for the seat is about £40, however you would also have to replace the SRS ECU as a fired airbag fault cannot be reset. I'm looking into this. I believe there may be a company that can re-set the ECU.
I have disconnected the side airbages on mine after one went off in a minor bump on the rear quarter, I think I will be able to fool the SRS ECU into thinking they are there. The worst thing was it blew all the stitching on the seat squab. I have not managed to get a replacement so I ended up hand stitching mine.
Airbags are not part of the MOT, as long as you can get rid of the error message and the SRS light you will not have a problem.:D
