as martin 1512 says maintenance is the answer.bought mine 5 year ago with 181000 miles.it does 120mile round trip 5 days a week then either landy shows, pay and play or various racetracks round the country with a f2 side car.now has over 400 000 miles had a clutch a radiater one head gasket,and apart from brake pads,tyres etc needs very little. although it does have a liking for panhard rod bushes,only ever failed mot the first time itested it,wouldnt change it for anything

Search for my 90 is well and truly under way, can't wait to get one! There's a bloke in Bolton who sells them on eBay, his seller name is yanthelandyman he looks to have a few quality ones I may pop over to his place soon and have a ganders at the goods!

i seem to remember people saying he sold overpriced heaps of **** ages ago but i could be wrong.

I've never dealt with the guy myself but his reputation is not good, I would say buy from him by all means but buy with your eyes open, take someone who knows about Land Rovers to look any prospective purchase, don't pay over the odds from him because he's a dealer. From what I've read (do a google search, that's what I did when looking at one he had for sale) his poor reputation comes largely from people who have not been happy with after sale issues.
 
Really? I'd heard otherwise, ah well it makes me glad I got forums like this to find the truth. I think this saturday I'm going to be all day defender shopping any decent places to start?
 
get yourself on piston heads... there is a really nice 110 on there. three owners from new:)

Had mine from new since 1992. 110 200 tdi. Regular servicing and under sealing 2 x yearly as it gets driven weekly through salt water and sand. It gets thoroughly jet blasted underneath after every trip. Its also been all over Europe pulling a 3 tonne trailer.

Only mods are a winch on the front and a higher output alternator.

190,000 miles. Original engine, gearbox and clutch.
Minor work
- new rad as viscous coupling fan came off and went through it.
- 2 x new alternators.
- 4 x new heavy duty springs.
- new steering box
- new power steering pump
- new injectors.
- usual ball joints / swivel joints.
- 3 sets of tyres (seriously!)
- 2 new windscreens.
- new hoses all round.
- new clock. (Got new 'old stock' from local dealer for £40 - original price outrageous. Nearly
£ 200 I think)
- new radio (Halfords £ 60. LR wanted nearly £400 for original).
- prop shaft UJ's.
- 2 new batteries.

Major work.
-As usual doors rotted so got good 2nd hand ones and treated it to a quick respray about 5
years ago
-Bulkhead beginnign to go beneath windscreen so that'll need sorting soon.
-Rear door beginning to show its age as spare wheel causing all kinds of welds to start
failing in frame.
- Rear chassis member beginning to shows its age and I've just got price from Pressbrake.

My sisters got a 91' 110 with over 300,000 miles on it but that is seriously shagged out with rotten bulkhead etc but they're going to spend a few grand on it (left in will) as its part of the family and the logic is once they'll know its sound rather than buying a 'better condition' one for the same money and then having to spend more on it.
Salt the most corrosive element to metal chassis pressure washing only spreads the infection more .
And probably why your alternators don't last long!
 
Maybe just three owners from new and has been checked out by dvla (new chassis) and given the all clear retaining it`s original numbers. With receipts for thousands of pounds thst have been spent on it. Hint hint. :D:D
 
You won't regret it. The reality is that all cars need regular maintenance and even then things will go wrong once in a while. Land Rovers last for years so there are a lot of old ones on the road, and in the nature of things, they will go wrong more often.

The difference between a Landy and many modern cars is that you can probably do most of the maintenance and repair yourself. The technology is basic, and the parts are cheap and easily available.

If you have a knowledgeable mate to take with you when test driving, your chances of getting a decent motor in the first place are greatly increased. And there are some excellent posts on this forum detailing general and specific things to look for. Don't let yourself be railroaded into paying more than you should for a questionable car; there are lots of good ones out there and always more coming up for sale.

When I lived down in your neck of the woods, one of your motorway traffic people was big on Landies, so why not have a word with someone in the RTD?

I also got some good advice from Copley Motors and from David Simmonite (before he died, of course!)

Do not go to Illingworth/Ovenden/Mixenden areas of Halifax under any circumstances, as you will probably finish up with a Bitsa!
 
Yup got sorted guys, I pick it up Wednesday (hopefully) its a 1988 90 the chassis is solid and there is very minimal rust, the last owner really looked after it, he did put a 200tdi in it though which I was quite dubious about but it runs and sound great! I'll put pics up as soon as I can. It's got quite a few extras but nothing major like a lift or snorkel or roll cage, just subtle changes like rock sliders and checker plate here and there. Managed to part ex my L200 too which I got £1500 for!!!
