...what's the indicated (circled) thing for, in the enclosed images? Yes, I know, I should know, and the knowledge is probably out there, but... over to you.

Flog it and blank off the butterfly flap/linkage on the manifold. Fit a simple electric vacuum pump and never look back.
 
Don’t listen to them. It’s a Lucas smoke tank. Don’t open it or your wipers won’t work.

I have this set up on mine but I am sure the servo is not working. I have tested it the same way I would on the 110 i.e. pump the pedal hard, start the engine, and feel for the sink. How do you test the component pieces and what is likely to have failed (2.25 diesel)?
 
you can test in the same way, your looking for a leak, if you pull hose of manifold can you feel any suction, replace then replace and see if theres any just before servo,is it different if res is isolated and t piece blocked ,or servo isolated and pipe blocked
 
Thanks guys! However, the servo works fine, so I am not going to do anything with it... unless necessary. :)
