Well hopefully I've done it folks.
I took the driver's side wheel and drum off and checked the direction the ratchet was moved when Mrs hovismon pressed the brake pedal. It wound the adjuster INWARDS!
So I took the adjuster toothed nut off, flipped it round, reinstalled everything and now it's working as it should!! This has melted my head, the friggen ratchet adjuster nuts. if you look at shoryukan's pic at the top of page two, you can see his ratchet teeth are right at the end of the adjuster, with the screw thread easily visible immediately to the right of it. This is how my driver side one is now, although mirrored as the adjuster is to the rear of the car. But if you look at the adjuster teeth, and the band to the immediate left of it, about the same width as the teeth, this it the whole nut. The actual nut is half plain and half teeth. If you flip that nut round, you'd have the teeth and the screw thread separated by the plain part of the nut, this is how my pass. side one is. No wonder I was confused!!! Both sides don't look the same, but at least the ratchet's working in the correct direction for both.
So I tightened up the handbrake lever and it now clicks about 4 or 5 times. The handbrake isn't holding as well as it did, yet. But it's working a bit. It will hold the car on a slight incline but it won't handbrake turn. I'll give it some time and miles now to bed in and hopefully adjust as best it can.
I'll keep yous informed, so I will.
